The 'old money' manicures you're about to see everywhere.

Hush. There's a change in the air. Do you feel it? Yes?? SAME.

Because while we all love a colourful nail art moment, it's no secret that in 2024 we've started drifting towards discrete, vintage-inspired beauty — from the 'old money bob' to simple, refined makeup looks (see: no mascara), we're in our 'quiet luxury' era. And expensive-looking manicures are right on brand.

Whether you're a fan of BIAB, shellac, SNS, gel nails or press-on nail stickers — 'old money' manicures are the timeless nail trend that are subtle, healthy-looking and (quietly) complement any outfit.

So, if you're keen to switch it up and take a peek at the biggest nail colour trend for 2024, we asked nail expert, founder of Sydney salon The Parlour Room and Self by The Parlour Room Natalie Ferrari to walk us through what to ask for at our next nail appointment.

Intrigued?

What is the 'old money' manicure?

As the name suggests, the 'old money' manicure, leans into TikTok's viral old money aesthetic. That preppy, elegant, luxurious style that's somehow both parts timeless and modern.

The 'old money' manicure itself is a nail style that looks classy and sophisticated — it's one of those chic, 'clean girl' manicure looks you'd see on the likes of celebrities like Sofia Richie (the queen of 'quiet luxury' herself).

Often worn sheer, 'naked' or in a semi-opaque milky shade of soft white or pale pink base (there are exceptions to a hint of neutral colour, though), this nail trend looks clean and healthy, without looking boring.

The best 'old money' manicures.

Want in on the trend? Course you do. We all do! Here's what you need to ask for next time you're in the salon.

1. 'Milk' nails.

A soft, delicate twist on the '90s French manicure trend, 'milk nails' merge the contrast of the classic signature pale pink and white tip, resulting in a sheer milky shade that looks both polished and expensive.

"Flowing on from the clean girl aesthetic vibe, subtle milk nails go with absolutely any look and suit most nail shapes and skin tones. The milky tones are extremely aesthetically pleasing.," said Ferrari.

From the shade to the glossy sheen, the best part about 'milk nails' is that they're completely customisable, depending on what kind of look you want to go for.

Ferrari said, "Our go-to shades to achieve this look are 'Blanc', 'Funny Bunny' and 'Debutante'."

Whether you want to lean into a softer shade or something that's more opaque, get ready to see this nail trend everywhere, friends.

2. Classic red nails.

"From bold 'Big Apple Red' to deeper hues, red nails are making a serious statement in current trends," said Ferrari.

"Red or dark burgundy are the epitome of elegance and sophistication. They absolutely never go out of style and exude timeless chic. If you want to dip your toes into this ‘old money’ trend, then this is the look to start with."

"Our go-to shades to achieve this look are 'Big Apple Red', 'Blues for Red' and 'Pumps or Cowboy Boots?'," she shared.

Look, there's just something about a red mani that always makes you look ten times more put together — we don't make the rules!

3. Japanese manicure.

Natural nail girlies, this one's for you! 'Naked' nail care and a focus on restoring and strengthening your natural nails is just another area of the beauty industry that's exploding, and it falls in line perfectly with this less is more, 'old money' approach.

And in 2024, Japanese manicures is where it's all at. Not only do they offer a great option to strip back the ingredients and damage to nails (no tools necessary!) — but they also look ridiculously luxe.

Giving your nails an overall glossy effect (that lasts anywhere between two to three weeks), it's that 'your nails but better' kinda vibe.

4. Glazed nails with a French tip.

"Classic French Manicures have made a real come back in the last two years. No longer a trend of the past, french manicured nails scream 'old money'," said Ferrari. For a fun and funky twist, add a chrome glaze over your french or experiment with different coloured tips."

Our go-to shades to achieve this look are 'Bubblebath', 'Put it in neutral', 'Love is in the bare' and 'Chrome glaze'.

Cute!

5. Chocolate nails.

We've said it once and we'll say it again: Chocolate nails are having a major moment. Chocolate shades, walnut brown and luxurious neutral shades are some of the most popular nail shades this year

"Chocolate nails are an understated nod to the ‘Old money’ trend. Rich brown tones compliment gold jewellery, making it a favoured choice among those with affluent tastes."

"Our go-to shades to achieve this look are 'Totally Trailblazing' and 'Mocha'," she added.

So, expect to see plenty of variations getting around, especially as autumn begins to creep in.

6. Navy blue.

"Navy blue has long been linked with notions of royalty and regal charm, which explains its integration into the 'old money' trend," shared Ferrari. "Designed to make a bold statement, navy blue nails command attention and convey a sense of sophistication."

Our go-to shades to achieve this look: 'Russian Navy' (shimmer), 'After Dark' and 'Best Foot Forward'.
