Taylor Swift's fans very nearly ruined her best friend's wedding.

Over the weekend, hundreds of Taylor Swift fans swarmed the wedding venue of music producer and friend Jack Antonoff and his fiancée, Maid actor Margaret Qualley.

The singer was among a dozen celebrity guests, including Channing Tatum, Lana Del Ray, Zoë Kravitz, Andie MacDowell, Ryan Reynolds and Cara Delevingne, who attended what was reportedly the rehearsal dinner for the couple on Long Beach Island in New Jersey. 

The private ceremony was held at the Black Whale restaurant in Beach Haven where fans watched as they entered and socialised inside the venue.

Despite police arriving to control the crowds, clips from fans showed hundreds of uninvited guests flooding the surrounding roads and knocking on the windows of the restaurant. 

Aside from chanting the singer's name, the crowd booed when the restaurant closed the balcony curtains while the evening went on. As soon as the rehearsal dinner wrapped up, it was reported Swift and Del Ray left immediately. 

Reports claimed Swift was frustrated by the hoard of fans. On social media, fans condemned those who swarmed the restaurant and pointed to the singer's Miss Americana documentary.

In it, Swift touched on her complicated relationship with privacy and the media. 

In 2020, the singer confessed to her life being far from "normal".

"I think that part of me not going crazy is me admitting my life is weird and not normal," she told Glamour Magazine.

"My mum is really good at putting things back into perspective for me. And it’s really nice when she says, 'I know there’s no way I could possibly understand what you’re going through, but here’s what I think.'"

Her lack of privacy led to her keeping her relationships under wraps as well, including her six-year-long one with actor Joe Alwyn before separating in April 2023.

"There is no easy way for me to engage with romance," she said. "And it’s a good thing that I feel really independent and I feel that my friends are all I need."

Unsurprisingly, the only people who could understand are other celebrities. 

"I feel really lucky to have about 10 friends, like Karlie [Kloss] and Lena [Dunham] and Selena [Gomez], who I can call any time of the day or night, who can at least relate in some way to what I’m going through," the singer told the publication. 

"It’s a circle of really strong women who I depend on."

We've seen what happens when celebrities' private lives are shelled out for public dissection. 

We saw the consequences of this in 2016 when Kim Kardashian was bound and robbed at gunpoint in a posh section of Paris. Her husband at the time, Kanye West, fled his New York City concert under the guise of a "family emergency".

In 2011, actor Sienna Miller was awarded close to $100,000 AUD when the newspaper, News of the World, admitted to hacking her phone and accessing her private messages.

It's happened time and time again to Swift, who had her relationship with Alwyn exposed in 2017 by paparazzi who had stalked the couple to get a photo of them at a hotel.

Privacy, no matter how fickle it can be in the digital age, is a right we are all entitled to no matter our social status. While a wedding at a restaurant being exposed to people online sounds innocent, the consequences can (and have been) dire.

So the next time a celebrity explicitly — or implicitly — tells us they want their private life to remain just that, we should probably listen.
