'I tried the $6 hack that cancels puffy eyes and dark circles.'

There are a lot of very bad beauty hacks out there. Stuff that's just... very silly. From lube primer to the 10-pump foundation hack and ski mask blush — I've tried my fair share of trends that are utter BS.

However, it's not all bad. There are some beauty hacks out there that are genuinely really great. The kind of stuff that ends up working its way into your usual beauty routine and make it easier, quicker — and the results, dare I say, even better.

Enter: the viral makeup technique for puffy eyes and dark circles.

Watch: Speaking of eye makeup, if you're struggling to get your eyeliner straight we have a brilliant solution. Post continues below.

In an Instagram post by content creator Erica Taylor (@ericataylor2347), the makeup artist shared a nifty technique to hide dark circles and puffiness.

The best part? We guarantee you'll already have everything you need in your makeup bag.

We love it when that happens!

So you know what? I put it to the test. Here's what happened.

What is the puffy eye makeup trick?

You need one product and you probably already have it: a light concealer.

Taylor said, "If you struggle with under eye puffiness or bags, watch this. This is a concealer hack you need to know. You can't just put on one concealer and hope for the best."

Instead, Taylor said to take a brighter coloured concealer and use this to camouflage your circles, rather than using a colour that perfectly matches your skin tone. She uses a Flower Beauty cream pencil in shade 'Light', which looks like a lighter peach tone.

"What we're going to do is we're going to look down, and you see that line under the bags? If you have puffy eyes or bags, you're going to have this if you're 47 and filter-free," she said.

"Now we're going to press it in," she explained, blending the concealer formula with her ring finger, gently patting it along the line.

"What that's doing, is camouflaging the look of the shadow under the bags. I did not get rid of the bag, I got rid of the appearance of the bag. And you know what? I'll take it."

Anyone else scrambling for their concealer, ready to give it a shot?

How did you go with it?

Okay so while we don't have this specific Flower Beauty cream pencil in Australia yet (sad face), I did manage to pick up the liquid version — the Flower Light Illusion Full Coverage Concealer, $6 in shade 'Light Clair'. However, you can use any brand or formula, really — so long as it is lighter than your usual concealer.

Here's what the Flower Beauty one looks like:

For me, while I deal with puffy under eyes every now and then, dark circles are probably my main gripe — so I was keen to see how this played out.

Following Taylor's instructions, I did my makeup as normal and titled my head downwards to find the under eye line I wanted to camouflage. It showed itself with zero hesitation, which was sad but ultimately very handy.

I used the doe end of the concealer applicator and ran it along that line, just like Taylor, and gently blended the formula in with my ring finger. And that's it! Easy as pie.

The verdict.

Overall, I'll definitely sub in this method for my everyday makeup look. I usually just slap some concealer under my eyes in the morning, willy nilly, without paying much attention to placement. Meaning? The results probably aren't as good as they can be.

I love how quick and easy this technique is, and the fact that you only really need a small amount of formula to make a difference.

Here's what it looked like on my left eye (I'm wearing no concealer on my right eye... can you tell?).

Left eye in both pictures = no concealer. Right eye in both pictures = fancy new concealer trick.

Look, while the difference is subtle, my right under eye definitely looks fresher and brighter.

While you can still see that line, as Taylor said — it's not about 'getting rid' of your under eye bags. Rather, you're aiming to change the appearance of it. And I think this technique, combined with opting for a lighter toned concealer over one that 'matches' your skin tone, works to cancel the shadows and stops your under eyes from looking kinda ashy and grey.

All in all, if you're a gal with puffy eyes or dark under eye bags and they're something that's bothering you, grab a (lighter) concealer and give it a whirl for yourself!

Now to ask Drew Barrymore where that Flower Beauty cream pencil is...
