The director of Twilight quietly shared a surprising story about Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson reuniting this year.

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart had a secret Twilight reunion this year and 2009 me is screaming.

The director of the franchise's first movie, Catherine Hardwicke, revealed that both she and Kristen gatecrashed Rob's 37th birthday party in May of this year.

I guess no one invited Taylor Lautner.

“I went to Rob's birthday party recently,” Hardwicke told the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “We had a fun thing, and then Kristen crashed it too. That was just a few months ago, and it was just like, ‘Oh my God!’ We all hugged each other, like, this is so crazy and cool.

“When Kristen walked into Rob’s birthday, she’s like, ‘Catherine? Rob’s birthday? What’s going on?’," Catherine recalled.

The director then went on to say that Kristen had initially been hesitant to enter Robert's party, before deciding to ring the bell at the gate and ask if it was "cool" for her to come inside. Cathrine said Robert immediately replied "of course" and warmly welcomed her when she entered the party.

“He’s such a lovely person,” Catherine said of the Batman actor.

In the same podcast, Catherine touched on Robert and Kristen's dating history, with the actors dating from 2009 to 2013.

She said their chemistry was "instant."

"I saw the sparks were flying so much," she said. "It totally makes sense because they’re both, like, so indie — indie music, indie authors, writers, films. They had all that stuff together."

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart's relationship and cheating scandal.

The first Twilight film started filming in 2008 and by November 2009, Rob and Kristen made their debut as a couple in a series of public make-out sessions.

The following year, Kristen gave her first interview where she confirmed they were dating by, well... not confirming they were dating. “People say, ‘Just say who you’re dating. Then people will stop being so ravenous about it.’ It’s like, No they won’t! They’ll ask for specifics," she told Elle in 2010.

Their relationship became increasingly more public as the years went on and Twilight released more sequels.

But things took a turn when Kristen started filming Snow White and the Huntsman with married director Rupert Sanders in August 2011.

In July 2012, photos of Kristen and Rupert kissing and cuddling in a secluded Los Angeles location were published, showing (basically) the whole world that Kristen had cheated on Rob.

The next morning, Stewart issues a statement to PEOPLE to apologise for the “hurt and embarrassment I’ve caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected.” She described the cheating as a “momentary indiscretion” that had “jeopardised the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I’m so sorry.”

Sanders also released his own apology to his wife via PEOPLE. “I am utterly distraught about the pain I have caused my family,” he said. “My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world. I love them with all my heart. I am praying that we can get through this together.”

The whole saga became one of the biggest scandals in pop culture history.

For some reason, Donald Trump also shared his thoughts. "Robert Pattinson should not take back Kristen Stewart. She cheated on him like a dog and will do it again just watch," the future president tweeted in 2012.

Kristen later commented on the random Trump callout. “He was mad at me a couple years ago, really obsessed with me a couple years ago, which is f***ing crazy," she reflected to Variety in 2017.

But despite Donald's disapproval, Kristen and Rob did get back together – and rather quickly after the cheating scandal made international headlines.

By September, the couple were reportedly back together.

In November, Stewart and Pattinson walked the red carpet together for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 2, marking the first time the two had made a public appearance since the cheating scandal.

When asked if she was back together with Pattinson, Stewart told the TODAY show “I’m going to just let people watch whatever little movie they think our lives are. Keep ’em guessing, I always say.”

The other relationship implicated in the cheating saga didn't fare so well.

In January 2013, Rupert's wife filed for divorce. "They gave it a shot for the kids, [but] she was just so angry,” an insider told Us. “She’s the kind of person who wouldn’t really ever get over it."

Then finally, Stewart and Pattinson broke Twihards' hearts the world over by ending their relationship in May 2013 after the release of the final Twilight film.

In 2014, Pattison opened up about the relationship and cheating scandal to Esquire UK. "S**t happens, you know? It's just young people...it's normal! And honestly, who gives a s**t?"

Kristen has since reflected on the hate she received, especially from other women. "Women are so judgmental of each other. It's very innate, instinctive, f**ked-up, animal-like," she told Variety in 2016. "It was something that was a nuisance. How do you resent me if you've actually never met me?"

Since their split, Kristen came out as bisexual and went on to be romantically linked to French singer Soko, her assistant Alicia Cargile, American musician St. Vincent, model Stella Maxwell, and is currently engaged to screenwriter Dylan Meyer.

Pattinson has had a similar dating trajectory, also dating only cool indie women.

He dated singer FKA Twigs between 2014 and 2017 before starting a relationship with singer/actor Suki Waterhouse in 2018, with the couple now living together in LA and getting set to welcome their first child
