'I can't get enough of the black maxi skirt this spring. Here are all the ways I style it.'

As a fashion writer, I’m always researching and trying new trends. Some of them stick and become an inherent part of me and my style. Others make it look like I got dressed in the dark.

Thankfully, the latest trend I tried sits in the former category. As the weather warms up I’ve been utterly obsessed with my black maxi skirt. I was first inspired when I saw supermodel (and my style muse) Elsa Hosk wear this Scanlan Theodore dress. She looked chic and effortless, two vibes I very much aspire to give off.

However, I didn’t have that Scanlan Theodore budget. So what did I do? I went searching for a dupe.

I looked high and low, scouring websites and perusing stores, but sadly I ended up empty-handed each time. After multiple failed attempts, a thought came to me: "Why don’t I create my own version by buying a black maxi skirt?".

I found a few options I liked but settled on this one from Runway The Label — it had the perfect amount of volume and the length suited my 5’5 frame.

Because I bought a skirt instead of a dress, the styling options were limitless. So far, I’ve dressed mine down with t-shirts, made it warmer with knitwear and also wore it to dinner by adding a few statement accessories.

The number one question I ask myself before hitting purchase on a clothing piece is, "Will this work with most things in my wardrobe?" and I can happily report that the black maxi skirt ticks the box.

I can assure you, that after you finish reading this story, you’re going to want to go out and buy one yourself. 

Of course, I would not fawn over my maxi skirt without giving you styling options, so without further ado, here is how I wear it.

Outfit #1: Casual and all black.

I have to say, this is my most favourite way to wear the black maxi skirt. I just threw on a black t-shirt, rolled up the sleeves to make things more interesting and paired it with my trusty ballet flats. 

You would have also noticed that I cinched my waist in with a chunky belt, and I did that because I wanted to break up the top and the bottom. 

When there's a lot of black, things can sometimes look too blended in, so always have a few belts handy to make everything look more polished.

Outfit #2: Something a bit more formal.

I strongly believe that a pair of heels can make any outfit dinner-appropriate. 

With this look, I chose a really lightweight, beige knit and paired it with brown accessories to soften up the colour palette. 

Of course, I couldn't walk out the door without gold jewellery, which matched the studs on the shoes perfectly.

Outfit #3: Corporate but cool.

This button-up shirt is my go-to whenever I'm in a rut, and it delivered once again. 

I chose a pair of block heels, because no one wants to go to work wearing uncomfortable footwear, and then finished it off with some chunky necklaces.
