Angie Kent is well aware that quite a few people in Australia believe she’s not really in love with The Bachelorette winner Carlin Sterritt.

The former Gogglebox star turned 2019 Bachelorette had fans of the series clutching their pearls and howling in pain after she chose Carlin over fan favourite Timm Hanly, but that’s only because she believes Australia didn’t really get to know her new boyfriend.

“I would never in a million years sign a contract that would make me stay with someone and be in a relationship,” Angie told Mamamia’s The Spill podcast when asked if she and Carlin were only keeping up appearances for the sake of some paperwork.

“That is not my idea of happiness. I would never do a TV show where that was the outcome. It’s all too raw and vulnerable and open.

“I did see people saying we were only staying together for money, for one hundred thousand dollars and I mean, I will take the money but to stay together for a two-year contract? I would never do that.”

During The Bachelorette’s Byron Bay finale episode, Angie told Timm she thought of him as a “soulmate” after he gifted her a ring. It was something she had to explain to Carlin the moment they were first alone together and away from the cameras.

“The moment when we were first in a room together without sound equipment and cameras, there were no words,” Angie said on The Spill. “We just wanted to hold each other and kiss each other.”

“We cracked open some champagne and the first thing we talked about was what had gone on, so I got to hear from her how things were on the show,” said Carlin. “At the end of the day, if Angie was to really reflect on what her heart wanted, it was me.

“So it does not affect me when I hear her say Timm was her soulmate, I can see it. As long as she doesn’t go running back to him.”

Angie also confirmed that she took the ring Timm gave her off before Carlin arrived, but she never had any intention of getting rid of it.

“I took Timm’s ring off as a sign of respect before Carlin arrived,” Angie confirmed. “I kept it out of a sign of respect as well. Timm gave me that as a gift to symbolise our time together and we did have a beautiful time. I’m never going to say otherwise.

“But I don’t walk around wearing both of them and saying ‘look at my two rings’.”

Carlin had a slightly different reaction to the double-up of rings, joking that “what Angie doesn’t know is that I’ve actually taken it and sold it to Cash Converters.

“It’s just a memory of the time we spent together, who am I to say no to a gift?” Angie added.

The new couple, who said they are looking forward to taking things slow and building a real relationship together, are not paying too much attention to the backlash around Angie’s choice.

In fact, the 29-year-old former I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star doesn’t believe anyone got to see the real Carlin during The Bachelorette. 

“Carlin is such a dork and no one got to see it on the show,” she said. “He’ll put on a song and do a whole dance routine for me and I’ll just sit there.

“I will be crying hysterically and he won’t stop even when it gets awkward.

“I went into this experience with an idea of what I wanted but without knowing how I was going to date and what I would feel. It changed as time went on but I’ll always want someone with a beautiful sense of humour and I see that now in different forms.

“You don’t need to be the funniest person in the room, and Carlin does make me laugh all the time.”
