According to this fashion expert, these are the 6 biggest winter trends of the season.

From puffer jackets to fuzzy dressing gowns, we're starting to get our winter wardrobes in order. But when it comes to the specifics and what's actually in style, I turn to the experts for guidance.

Nicole Adolphe is The Iconic's Head of Style, as well as a gun at all things fashion and style.

She went on Mamamia's podcast What Are You Wearing to dish on what is in and out this season in the fashion realm, and what to stock up on this winter.

Adolphe has an interesting perspective to hear, considering she and her team play a huge role in picking apart the trends on the runway and tailoring that to the everyday customer.

So without further ado, here are the colours to gravitate towards, the shoes that are must-haves and what's the go with trench coats — aka the best trends according to the pro.

Midi skirts are a vibe.

"Last year we saw all those micro minis, but now it's all about the midi skirt. Probably like a silk/satin slip skirt would be one [to look at trying], and then another is a denim midi," Adolphe said on What Are You Wearing.

Even recently Mamamia's very own Holly Wainwright has been rocking a denim midi skirt around the office. And now I simply must buy one because I'm obsessed.

If you're a bit unsure how best to style a denim midi skirt, Adolphe recommended trying them with a boot of your choice, a fabulous knit, tucked-in tailored shirt or a good ol' t-shirt.

The top three shoes this winter.

You certainly won't see a pair of thongs in this recco roundup, considering your toes would freeze off in these chilly months! Instead, Adolphe said there are three shoe options that she always gravitates towards in winter.

The first is a boot. But what sort of boot you may be asking?

So glad you asked — some of the styles that we'll definitely be seeing on the store shelves this season are chunky boots, knee-high boots and/or ankle boots, according to Adolphe.

The second is a loafer. Socks or stockings, your choice.

Third, a point-toe heel or mule. This shoe is great for those occasions when a fancier shoe is desirable.

Add some colour via knits.

When it comes to building a capsule winter wardrobe, neutrals often reign supreme, which is completely fair. But Adolphe said to Mamamia not to be wary of colour, regardless of the season. Especially for knitwear.

"Cobalt blue is a really good one for this season and what's good about this colour is that it's great when teamed with black. If you already have black pants, blazers, coats and things, then adding a cobalt blue knit will be easy. Another one is bright green or forest green," she said.

And if your staple items often verge more to neutrals like beige, camel, white etc. rather than black, Adolphe said a great pop of colour that would complement these tones is any shade of pink you fancy.

"Pink can be a little bit stark with black, pink goes great with your whites and creams already in your wardrobes."

Wide-legged denim pants are still the most popular choice.

We officially have confirmation — skinny jeans remain dead in the eyes of the fashion gods.

Not only are they super uncomfortable but just not the vibe anymore, Adolphe said, adding that a wide-legged or straight-legged pair of jeans is the shape that suits the vast majority of body types.

A knit dress can be your best friend in the winter months.

Ever since we saw those fabulous stretchy knit-style dresses from Abbie Chatfield's label, these sorts of items have been a constant in shopping centres and online retailers.

As Adolphe said: "These knit dresses suit everyone and they're trans-seasonal. It's still a dress of course, but is warmer, and can have plenty of jacket styles layered on top."

These are also great for those who are office workers — wear the winter woolly jacket on top of a knit dress during the commute and be able to peel off the jacket when you get to the warm office.

Jackets, jackets, jackets.

You've got six options to play with this season.

We have — trench coats, a classic puffer, a bomber jacket, a blazer and lastly a motorcross/biker jacket.

"They would all work with your midi skirt too! You pick what suits you, dependent on whether you like a longer or cropped jacket. Plus all provide plenty of warmth. And if you are in need of a trench coat — get the classic camel colour," Adolphe said.

Now that we have all the tips and tricks for winter fashion at our beck and call, it can sometimes feel as though we're starting from scratch.

But as Adolphe said on the pod, it's not about culling what's already in your closet or buying a whole new wardrobe selection (certainly not in this economy!). Rather, it's about having a bunch of inspiration handy when you're on the lookout for a new piece or while op-shopping.

Hopefully now, your winter wardrobe dilemmas feel long gone!
