When Jacinta Kretschmer was on the precipice of turning 50, she packed a bag and left her family home.
She didn't know if it would be for good, but what the mother of four did know was that, for the first time in her life, it was her turn to be selfish.
Her three oldest girls had already moved out of home, but it was her youngest daughter — freshly graduated — along with her husband, who she was leaving behind to stay with a friend.
Jacinta's reason for doing so? She'd recently discovered she was a lesbian.

"I was raised Catholic so I have always known I was different, I just didn't know how," she tells Mamamia. "You didn't see queerness around. You didn't hear about it around you."
By her mid-20s, Jacinta was a married mother of three, with no time to think about her sexuality.
"I was so busy," she recall, adding that her fourth child followed 13 years after the third.
"It wasn't until I was in my 40s that I started questioning why I had these feelings I didn't understand. I had to take myself to a counsellor who cleared everything. Everything that was inside. All of the questions I was asking myself and all of the things about me I didn't know."
