Model Jessica Vander Leahy on the 7 classic items she will never wear.

Fashion is subjective, and while many trends have a way of cycling in and out of popularity over time, a handful of classics have staying power. But what if you're not a fan of the classics? Here are some out-of-the-box ideas I use to collate my wardrobe essentials without compromising my taste.

1. Basic ballet flats.

Get ready for blister season, all of you, because ballet flats, which epitomise elegance, are genuinely back. The slip-on design affords these shoes a seamless blend of elegance and versatility that can transcend occasions and seasons.

But, if you're like me and think the simple flat is a less-graceful-more-clodhopper-y look for your big feet, then you can still enjoy this slipper-like staple with a few chic tweaks.

Opting for a strap might remove the slip-on element, but it makes for an exciting shoe when shopping for a less dainty foot. A good example is the pointy Jil Sander's take on this archival style; the point combats any stumpiness. Then there's Reformation's affordable studded round-toe Mary Jane offering and the Alias Mae' Pia' flats, which might be the most popular shoe in the country right now.

2. Classic crew neck cardigans.

When temperatures cool, the classic crew neck cardigan is considered essential. The simple round neckline means this enduring piece is a great go-to layering option for casual, more polished looks. But there are other options, too.

Soft and versatile, a V-neck jumper, made from soothing-like cashmere, exudes sophistication. It is ideal for layering and adds elegance to both casual and formal ensembles.

Sure, fashion brands have given fresh life to humble knits on their runways, but there are several affordable options to shop instead. The COS wool v-neck featuring a nipped-in waist and subtle batwing sleeves is a good alternative. Or there's the classic Ralph Lauren Linen Blend V-Neck Cardigan.

3. Fitted mid-calf boots.

Whether it sits atop a cute kitten heel or block raise, most people can't pull off the stout proportion of a boot that ends at the calf. Call me nuts, but even when styled repeatedly with cropped jeans or skirts, there's always a yearning to see the look with a different shoe.

Literally any other shape. But if we're being versatile, a looser cowboy fit—think iconic Aussie brand R.M.Williams—is a great shoe that can be worn in summer, too, with shorter, flouncy dresses. Hot tip: Aussie brand Bared Footwear does a great job of boots with a wider calf fit for curvier leg shapes.

4. Classic grey wool vest.

Comfy and classic, the muted grey wool vest is the style you will find from your local vintage boutique. Often spun from sumptuous merino wool, mohair, or cashmere, the cool, intelligent girls layer it over collared shirts or flowy dresses. But not me.

Instead, I'll reach for an open tuxedo-style vest any day because of the flattering fitted silhouette and something with a smattering of dainty buttons down the front. Or, if you must vest, try bolder pops of colour a la Gigi Hadid.

5. Stripe trend.

No doubt, nautical pieces are some of the most timeless pieces in your wardrobe, but worn classically, they can also be boring.

If you must try this trend, why not lean in with contrasting colours or dramatic stripe sizes for an extra sartorial standout? There's also the option of hunting for vertical prints that offer a more figure-skimming illusion.

6. Capri pants.

Capri pants are those three-quarter crop pants that are longer than shorts but quite a trouser and snug on the body. In other words, it is mostly a disaster for me.

Once the staple of casual wear of the 1990s, cargo pants with multiple pockets have swung back in favour in fashion circles. Compared to the streamlined capri, cargo or slouchy trousers might not be a comparable style for everyone, but they're much more aesthetically interesting.

7. Gingham tiered skirts.

Every summer, this linen skirt shape, made famous in the 2000s, starts trending. Sometimes, rightly or wrongly, with a matching flouncy top in some shade of yellow or red or orange.

One of the ways to wear a tiered skirt is with proportions, so think about shoes: Do you need a higher heel or high boot to make things more interesting for the visible part of the leg?

Also, remember the rule of thirds: the top half should be one-third and the bottom two-thirds, so team the floaty vibe with a shorter fitted top or a crop so there's a visible waist shape.

Try less ruffle and more mid skirts with attractive prints—like polka dots and paisley—or just plain longer skirts in black or white.
