The 8 items that will be huge in 2024, according to a stylist.

Welcome to the Nothing To Wear Edit where each week we curate the best of whatever we spoke about on the podcast. Listen to the full episode here.

When shopping for new clothes this summer, there are a few key pieces to look out for. More specifically, eight key pieces, according to stylist Nicole Adolphe.

The Iconic's head of style, who is often described as a "walking fashion encyclopaedia", joined Mamamia's fashion podcast Nothing to Wear to reveal just what to buy this season to get a jump on the 2024 fashion trends. According to Nicole, jorts, midis and sets are all at the ready to take us on our new year adventures.

"We're going to be wearing longer shorts this summer. Technically, they're called jorts, which are a cross between jeans and shorts. Only jorts are super casual and aren't tight-fitting - and they don't just have to be denim, but they are also great in linen fabrics," says Nicole.

As for dresses, the style that will be particularly popular is the good ol' midi. And in news that many will be relieved to hear, we're seeing the end of cut outs.

"They're not as crazy now. It might be like a little asymmetrical neckline or a peephole here and there, but there certainly won't be cutaways in the worst possible areas anymore," she tells Nothing to Wear.

The final summery trend Nicole is projecting is the return of crochet fabrics.

"This might be a knitted or crochet dress, or a knitted fabric jumper going into autumn. Those open-holed net dresses will be big."

As for what are Nicole's personal top fashion picks for summer 2024? She shares them with Mamamia below.

1. Reach for a matching top and shorts set.

"Although matching sets had their moment in 2023, I will still be reaching for them on those days when I want to look effortlessly put together. When it comes to workwear, the short suit takes over from the blazer and wide-leg pant set. For the summer, we will continue to see a tailored sleeveless waistcoat with pants."

2. Combine checks with stripes.

Now's the time to have fun with patterns.

"Checks and stripes clashes featured heavily on recent runways and will be the new combination for 2024. I'll be sticking with a toned-down take, with a tunic-style top and black pants, as well as a checked midi-skirt with a white tank," says Nicole.

What to buy:

COS Halterneck Tunic-Style Top, $99 in blue dark stripe.

Silent Theory Harvey Check Skirt, $79.95 in orange.

3. Look for clothes in Ruby Red.

"The colour of the season is Ruby Red, with the likes of Cobalt Blue and Bold Green taking a back seat. Nothing is more alluring than a red mini dress on a date night."

4. Pick silver accessories.

"In with silver accessories and out with the gold! Silver metallic will be all the rage in the new year, especially when it comes to footwear," says Nicole.

"A pointed-toe slingback is the heel of 2024, they are elegant and timeless."

What to buy:

Najo Chia Hoop Earring in silver, $63.20.

5. Invest in a tailored midi skirt.

"Thanks to the ongoing Y2K resurgence, skirt trends have reached both ends of the spectrum - from the itty bitty micro-mini, to the grunge-inspired longer line skirt. I've got my eyes on this tailored midi skirt that can be worn year-round."

What to buy:

AERE Linen Tailored Midi Skirt, $120 in neutral.

6. Slip on a knit dress.

"There was no trend more ubiquitous on the spring/summer 2023 runway than crochet, with flowy dresses with fringe and open-weave tops. I am dialling it back this summer by grabbing pieces like this Open Crochet Knit Dress from Minima Esenciales." Nicole says this will be her go-to dress over swimwear this summer.

"Additionally, a knit crochet tank is perfect with jeans or jorts for an added something special when your aim is to beat the heat."

7. Patterned sheer long-sleeve tops.

Nicole says it's time we have fun and turn heads with a sheer long-sleeve top that boasts a subtle print, offering a less revealing take on the 'naked' trend.
