Sarah Jessica Parker had to be talked into doing Sex & The City.

Would it have worked without her?

Eternal single lady (well, until those movies ruined everything) Carrie Bradshaw is one of the most iconic characters of our time, embodied by Sarah Jessica Parker, 50, who is still basically interchangeable with the character.

It’s the role that’s defined her career, and it’s the one she’ll always be remembered for.

However, she desperately didn’t want to do it.

According to a very juicy snippet of conversation SJP had with actor and musician Seth Rudetsky, she filmed the pilot then forgot all about it.

When HBO picked up the series, she was extremely reluctant to do it. In Rudetsky’s words:

“She completely wanted to get out of it. I mean, completely,” he writes in Playbill.

Rudetsky says the actress synonymous with our lovelorn protagonist enjoyed her “journeyman” lifestyle, hopping from project to project, and didn’t want to be tied down to a television series.

In fact, she was so loathe to do the show that she offered to do THREE films for HBO free of charge, in exchange for a reprieve.

To what must be HBO’s eternal relief, and Desperate Housewives actress Dana Delany’s eternal lament, the network convinced the actress to give it a go, and Carrie Bradshaw/Sarah Jessica Parker mania ensued.

Dana Delany.

Delany was considered for the role but turned it down because it was too racy.

Rudetsky recently performed with SJP and her husband Matthew Broderick in Broadway @ Town Hall, which is where he gleaned this very important information.

He also shared that there’s something in the works involving the Sex and the City cast, and that Parker has no regrets about her time on the show.

“She loved playing Carrie Bradshaw and she told us that there may be a project coming up involving all the ladies! I’ll tell you who it probably won’t involve: me. I auditioned for the first movie and decidedly did not get cast,” he wrote.

Who else could have delivered lines like this with such conviction?

“I’ll also tell you, however, whom it might involve: my mother! She auditioned for the film and got a call back. #NotCool.”

Meanwhile, across town, I couldn’t help but wonder… Is Sarah Jessica Parker regretting chatting with her loose-lipped co-star?
