'I tried the $25 viral lipstick that's selling out everywhere. Here's my honest review.'

Mamamia’s Tried and Tested series is your review of the latest to hit our desks in beauty, health and wellbeing. You won’t find any #sponsored content here, just honest, relatable and independent advice. This week, Mamamia's Senior Health and Beauty Writer reviews Revlon Super Lustrous Glass Shine Lipstick.

My lips. They don't play nicely with lipstick. Never have. No matter how long-wearing/moisture-giving/balmy the product is, they will ALWAYS dry out my lips. Make 'em all thirsty and flaky and in need of moisture every three minutes.

Also, my lips are literally the size of an actual shoelace, sooo... I tend to just veer away from colour.

Which is an awful shame, really. As someone who is lucky enough to try lots of products - including jazzy new lipsticks - I always find myself trying them and giving them a sad pass, before loading approximately 15 tonnes of lip balm onto my lips.

But then I discovered these Revlon Super Lustrous Lipsticks and uh oh! Have we got a convert??

While the product isn't particularly new (it launched back in 2020, which feels like three seconds ago, but anyway), the lipsticks went viral on TikTok at the end of 2022 and have pretty much been sold out everywhere since.

This is very good news - because it ultimately means the product is living up to the insane hype - but also, bad news. Because, how to try??

But alas, after a week of attempting to hunt them down at every single chemist in Sydney, I managed to get my mitts on two shades - 'Toasting Glasses' and 'Glassy Pink'.

While a shade called 'Rum Raisin' is going wild on TikTok (it has 60 million views and is supposedly a dupe for Dior Glow), all of the shades are seeing massive success - like, people are frothing over all of them. So, it seems you really can't go wrong with any of the shades.

Things to know: You can snap up Revlon Super Lustrous Glass Shine Lipstick for $25.95 (or $15.39 at Chemist Warehouse - ZING!).

Other things to know: It's available in 25 shades in the US, but in Australia, we get 12 - which is sad, but we'll take what we can get. It's currently available in 'Sparkling Quartz', 'Beaming Strawberry', 'Glossed up Rose', 'Cherries in the Snow', 'Fire & Ice', *gasps for breath*, 'Glazed Mauve', 'Rum Raisin', 'Toasting Glasses', 'Black Cherry', 'Glassy Pink', 'Love Is On', and 'Dewy Peach'. *Collapses*.

Wanna know how I went with Revlon Super Lustrous Glass Shine Lipstick?

Let's go!

Okay. But what's so good about 'em?

In short, it's a true lip gloss-lipstick hybrid - it applies like a moisturising balm, offers a hint of sheer colour like a lipstick but shines like a gloss.

As TikToker @catherine.abreu puts it, it's as if "a lip gloss and lipstick had a baby".

And honestly, I'm all for this evolution. If you’re not a lipstick person like me, I reckon these could be the perfect pick for you.

I think the recent revival of cult lip products like Clinique Black Honey and Dior Lip Glow says it all - there's certainly a buzz around 'universal shade matching' and customised colours because they're so versatile and clever.

As I mentioned before, it's available in a heap of different shades that look different on everyone's lips - including deep plums, rosy reds, pretty pinks, as well as clear formulas.

How did you go with it?

Omg, where to start? I recorded a snippet of my first impressions while testing out both 'Toasting Glasses' and 'Glassy Pink' and chucked them up on the Mamamia TikTok - and I'm a wee bit obsessed.

It glides on your lips and gives you a sheer coat of balm-like colour that feels buttery-soft and super blendable. It's lovely and hydrating on the lips - thanks to a nourishing blend of ingredients like hyaluronic acid and aloe.

But the finish. Gah. It's just so glossy and glass-like and I can help but think there's no way it's a chemist product? Like, it FEELS like it should be more expensive than it actually is??

It's also super versatile. It can be worn alone or over the top of a high payoff formula to give it that extra bit of zoosh.

As someone who is ALL OVER more spendy formulas like the Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb and Dior Lip Glow, I think I've found the perfect dupe that's literally half the price.

Check out my first impression of 'Toasting Glass' below:

The only thing I will mention is that I probably should have used a lip liner before application. Because the formula is like a balm, the waxy consistency can mean that it has the tendency to bleed over your lip line.

The verdict.

I'm a BIG, SHOUTY, TWO THUMBS UP kinda fan.

These formulas are very, very good and almost certainly live up to the hype.

They're an easy way to feel that little bit more pulled together and give your lips a leg up, without having to mess around with super-drying formulas that do approximately nothing for your lips.

So far, I've worn it out to dinner - but as I mentioned before, I reckon if I'm using it for everyday wear, I'm going to make sure I pair it with a solid liner so it sticks around longer.

All in all, a very good chemist product that seriously surprised me.
