A beauty writer on the best items to pack when you're travelling.

While travelling is arguably one of the best plans to have in the calendar, the lead up to take-off can often be a little... too stressful.

Working out what to pack, making sure you don’t forget anything, the fear of having a bag a little too heavy and having to pay the exorbitant fee for more weight if you're flying, or heaven forbid, having to sacrifice space and leave things behind.

But that’s why I’m here. To help you consolidate that never-ending list of beauty products, so you can pack efficiently, and still have everything your beauty-loving heart still needs while away.

Here are the seven essential products you will find in my beauty bag any time I am travelling.

Sunscreen

While wearing SPF every single day is important, when on holidays, we always love to spend extra time outdoors, naturally. Which exposes our skin to more harmful UVA and UVB rays. Protection is key, so having a sunscreen that you want to use in your bag is a must.

Hamilton Everyday Face SPF 50+ is a non-greasy, matte finish, invisible coverage sunscreen that is suitable for everyday wear, making it a great holiday companion. It gives high sun protection and designed for all skin types, while containing aloe vera and vitamin E to moisturise your skin.

It’s free from fragrance, PABA and lanolin, and designed to work under makeup or on simply on its own for a protected makeup-free day. You'll find it at Chemist Warehouse in a 200ml bottle, or a handy Everyday Face Cream SPF 50+ version in a 75g tube that's incredibly ideal for travel.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use. Reapply sunscreen frequently. Avoid prolonged sun exposure and wear protective clothing, hats and eye wear when exposed to the sun. Image: Supplied.

Face mist

I just don’t travel without a face mist. It is a must-have because my already dry skin suffers terribly while travelling, especially when on a plane. Having a face mist makes it easy to spritz and go, maintaining hydration comfortably while travelling, without feeling like you need to do a full skincare routine.

Dry shampoo

Planning for hair washing while travelling can become a bit... challenging. I have a clear routine down when I’m at home – two washes a week. While I'm travelling, this can become somewhat unpredictable.

Dry shampoo is your saviour. Particularly if you have an extra-long flight with no shower available, dry shampoo will save the day, and be there for when the oil hits. A little spritz on your flight and hop off looking ready to take on the world (or just, ya know, Byron Bay).

Multipurpose crayon

Having one product that can be used as a lipstick, blush, eye colour or more is ridiculously handy while travelling. While options are great – a multipurpose product can save SOOO much space in your bag that can be used for many things – that extra jumper, another pair of shoes, or (if you’re me), shopping while away!

Lip balm

A MUST have. I mean, I have a desk lip balm, a car lip balm, one in each of my bags, so of course I will have a travel lip balm.

The Blistex Lip Conditioner SPF 30 pot is handy for travelling as it is ultra-hydrating, meaning you can see the sights, whether it’s in the warm sunshine, dry winds or on the ski slopes in the middle of winter, while avoiding chapped lips.

Glowy, buildable foundation

It's always hard when you’re going away to know beforehand what coverage you are going to want based on the activities you'll be doing (or what the weather will decide to be like). Some days you'' want something light to just even the skin tone, while others you might want a little bit more coverage for that fancy dinner out. Having something that is lightweight but has the capacity for a higher, buildable coverage when you need it means that you're set for anything!

Roll-on perfume

One of the products that often takes up the most room in your bag is your perfume bottle. Not just because it’s large, but because you want to keep that breakable guy protected while you travel. The answer? Roll-on!

Roll-on perfumes are not just conveniently sized, but often they are longer-lasting than your regular spray perfumes. They are also super handy to throw in your handbag to reapply throughout the day as you need.

Always read the label and follow the directions for use.

Apply 20 minutes before sun exposure. Sunscreen is only one part of sun protection so wear protective clothing and seek shade. Avoid prolonged sun exposure. Re-apply every 2 hours after swimming, towelling and perspiring in accordance with directions.
