The road to Waleed Aly’s phenomenally dignified speech at the Logies was a long and arduous one.
We have had to tolerate a lot of bad writing, delivered by people with no discernible comedic abilities, to get to what was perhaps the most anticipated Logie moment in recent history. We are Australians, so we never take our achievements seriously.
The Logies, and every other entertainment industry award, are routinely derided and undermined, because we are unable to believe in our talents. It is not only the tall poppy syndrome that rears its head at each of these occasions but also, we simply cannot ever believe that Aussies could be anywhere near as good as Hollywood, or our founding/invading fathers in Europe.

waleed's religion would have served him well and added to what is a wonderful, brave character striving for justice. Let's please not underplay his outstanding journalism. In a time where everyone is so fearful of their freedom of speech Waleed is a journalist! Speaking up fearlessly, what journalism used to be in the days of Derryn Hinch (who continues to champion victims of child abuse) Your religion or lack of should underpin your character and make you better, your best! For this he is a great example, as a journalist he is the real deal. Hooray for an educated, passionate winner of high character. Not a sensationalist but an eloquent, fearless truth speaker.
I guess I just fear his award being construed as a PC statement from the powers that be while simultaneously patting ourselves on the back which is just utterly patronising and cringe worthy.
