The child's scream that rocked an entire town.

Mother of two, Tiffany Sayre was the latest victim in a series of brutal murders in the Southern Ohio city, Chillicothe.

Like the three of the six other victims of a suspected serial killer, Tiffany’s body was found in the river, where it had been for some weeks.

The entire town of Chillicothe is struggling to come to terms with the fact that women in their community are being stalked and murdered.

But it is one voice that has come to represent the town’s confusion and distress.

Tiffany Sayre’s three year old daughter cried out at her mother’s funeral as she listened to a number of friends and family members eulogise her mother, whose murder is still unsolved.

The three-year-old girl screamed,”Mummy, mummy, I want my mummy.”  throughout the funeral. Family members tried to console the little girl who still cannot understand why her mum has not returned home.

Tiffany’s sister, Jessica, has spoken of the heartbreak of trying to tell Tiffany’s daughters about what happened to their mum.

“It’s not fair on them,” said Jessica, “How do we explain this to them? How do we tell them their mom was murdered and won’t be coming home?”

Family members spoke to the Huffington Post, explaining that Tiffany’s other daughter, five-year-old Rylee, thought she was going to the funeral home to show her mum the new dress she had bought for her. Tiffany’s great-aunt said, “She was bawling, and we had to sit her down and explain to her that she wouldn’t be able to see Mommy in her new dress.”

Tiffany Sayre is one of six women who have been reported missing in the Chillcothe area in the past 13 months. Two of the women are still missing, whilst three have been found dead in creeks near one another and the other shot to death.

The brutal nature of Tiffany’s death meant that her casket had to be closed. Tiffany was murdered last month, however her body was hidden in a culvert, meaning it wasn’t found until the 20th June.

Huffington Post reporter, David Lohr, wrote that, “The passage of time and exposure to the elements necessitated a closed coffin, robbing friends and family of a final look at her.”

All of the women murdered in the series of the Ohio disappearances have had some connection to drugs and/or prostitution.

Tiffany had a tumultuous childhood, being raised by her grandparents from three months of age. At 16, her grandfather passed away which reportedly “shattered” her. In the same year, Tiffany was diagnosed with a medical condition that prevented her from having children, stealing her dreams of being a mother.

Tiffany developed a long-term drug habit in an attempt to heal the wounds of her troubled childhood. At 21, she surprisingly fell pregnant. With the help of her grandmother she raised her first child, Rylee. Two years later, Kayla was born.

Tiffany adored both her girls, but eventually had to sign the custody rights of them to her grandmother. She remained very active in her daughter’s lives, but a family member said, “She couldn’t give the babies the type of life they needed.”

Late last year, Tiffany’s life took a turn for the better and she began recovering from her drug addiction. She began a relationship with 42 year-old, Garret Maynard and was feeling optimistic about the future. But tragically, after just over four months together, Maynard unexpectedly died from a blood clot.

Tiffany’s sister said that her drug habit was worse than ever following Maynard’s death. His passing ignited familiar memories of trauma and loss. Tiffany turned back to drugs and she eventually began to work as a sex worker.

Ruth Sayre, Tiffany’s grandmother, has said that she will always unconditionally love her granddaughter, “My thoughts will always be on her,” she said. “I don’t care who she was or what she did. I will always love my granddaughter.”

Family have said that after the funeral they hung up pictures of Tiffany in her daughter’s rooms. Sam Sayre, Tiffany’s aunt told the girls, “Mommy will be sleeping with you every night. All you have to do is look up at those pictures and Mommy will be there.”

To cover the burial costs, the Sayre family have launched a GoFundMe page, which you can donate to here
