The most offensive ads of 2011 + week in pics

Australian music industry icon Molly Meldrum is in a critical condition after falling from a ladder at his home in Richmond. According to Ambulance Victoria, Meldrum, 61, was placed in an induced coma before being transported to hospital.

In the other week in pics… Steer clear of race, religion and sex. That’s what we can learn from a year in advertising after the Advertising Standards Bureau released its list of the top 10 complained about ads of 2011.

The ads you hated the most. The Advertising Standards Bureau has released its list of the 10 most complained about ads this year. Top of the list was this Rip & Roll ad from the Queensland Association for Healthy Communities, which received 222 complaints. The complaints were dismissed.

Number 2 on the list is this TV ad from Energy Watch. It showed an Indian man selling the best energy deals. It received 75 complaints. The complaints were upheld and the campaign was modified or discontinued.

Number three was these ads from Mypeace which said Jesus:A prophet of Islam and features a phone number to call for a free Koran. The ads received 58 complaints. The complaints were dismissed.

These General Pants Co ads show a topless woman and a male unzipping her pants. They received 37 complaints.

27 complaints about these Supre ads which showed a women wiggling around in Jeggings. The complaints were dismissed.

When Optus aired this ad of two crocodiles playing tennis with a sugar glider as a ball, the bureau received 24 complaints.

These billboard ads from The Tool Shop featured three women and asked viewers to imagine all three at once. It received 25 complaints, which were upheld and the campaign was modified or discontinued.

When Meryl Streep, 62, posed on the cover of US Vogue’s January issue promoting her new role as Margaret Thatcher in the film Iron Lady and said she joked to the magazine’s staff she was ‘probably the oldest’ woman to be on the cover. They said she was.

Billboard names Adele as its artist of the year. She's on the cover of the mag, head and shoulders only...

A guy modelling a push-up bra for women. Australian male model Andrej Pejic, who has made headlines around the world for modelling female fashion, has now taken his feminine look further by appearing in an advertising campaign for Dutch chain Hema.

The most controversial magazine covers of the year. James Franco’s bum. The actor posed for Flaunt magazine with his pants down.

Elton John and his partner David Furnish with their baby Zachary. The family appeared on the cover of January Us Weekly. Some US stores censored the cover, placing the kind of shied you see over porn magazines over the front.

The UK Grazia cover of Kate Middleton in her wedding gown was all very well, until Australian Grazia released a similar cover – using less photoshop around Kate’s waist. (Click to next slide.)

Glee’s Lea Michelle caused controversy when appeared on the cover of US Cosmopolitan bearing her chest – and lots of it. The mag responded to some parents’ concerns saying Michele is a grown woman and Cosmopolitan is a magazine for adults.

This one kind of speaks for itself. One of the world’s most famous atheists, Ricky Gervais, is crucified on the cover of The New Humanist magazine.

Louis Vuitton condoms anyone? That’s right $68 buys you a 12 pack of the designer condoms, which are enveloped in the label’s signature packaging.
