Sophie Monk on why she's glad she didn't have sex on The Bachelorette.

Fact: Sophie Monk is Australia’s version of Dr. Phil, and we wholeheartedly trust her advice. Especially when it comes to dating.

Sure, she’s been engaged four times, and in her own words was unlucky in love until The Bachelorette, but if there’s one thing Sophie Monk knows – it’s pure, unashamed honesty. So in an interview with Mia Freedman for her No Filter podcast, Monk delivered some sobering dating advice, and we’re all listening.

“If I could tell any woman anything, it’s do not have sex on the first night – wait for a while,” she told Mia. “Wait as long as you can – you’ve got to”

The 'when do you have sex' question is something women have been debating long before the 'Charlotte v Samantha' conundrum, circa Sex and the City, came into our lives, but for Sophie, it's all about protecting herself emotionally.

In fact the former Bachelorette went so far as to say that it was one of the "best" things about going on the show.

"Sex complicates things," she said. "I’ve always waited, but when I do, then you fall in love."

"Guys and girls are so different, guys literally have sex and they’re done. Girls have sex and they go we’re in love."

It's all a bit Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, but there's actually some science to back up Sophie's 'findings'.

It all comes down to the hormone oxytocin, which gets released during orgasm and increases trust between you and your partner.

In a primal sense it'll make the couple more inclined to have babies and forward the human race (yay, procreation), but when dating comes into play it can make making good decisions, and logical thinking... difficult.

But according to research, women produce more oxytocin than men, and can therefore be more likely to establish empathy and fall in love with a man after sex.

Eugh.

Obviously, it's completely up to you whether or not you have sex on the first, second or tenth date - or when you're not dating at all. But for Sophie Monk, the weird world of The Bachelorette had quite the upside.
