Share Your Space: A restored art deco apartment in the heart of Sydney.

Mamamia's Share Your Space series asks everyday women to share all the juicy, specific details about their home. How much do you pay in rent? Who do you live with? Where did you get your furniture? It's pulling back the curtain on real estate in Australia,and allowing us to really see how the people around us live. 

In this episode of Share Your Space, Mamamia joins Emma Blomfield of Emma Blomfield Studio to show us inside her home. 

Age: 36

Job: The founder and head stylist of Emma Blomfield Studio. 

I live with: Myself and my mini schnauzer, Louis.

Location: I live in Sydney's North Shore, in a gorgeous art deco apartment I've just finished renovating!

Lifestyle: I'm a born and bred Sydneysider so I've grown up experiencing the rich variety of experiences Sydney has to offer. Being close to the CBD means you're just a stone's throw away from quite a few of Australia's monumental landmarks, whilst still being able to get the quietness and beauty of suburban living.

You're within a walking distance of some of the most beautiful neighbourhoods, parks, beaches and iconic landmarks in Australia. I love it here!

So, take us inside.

Living room: The unit is a 1930s art deco unit with many of the period features still in place. But over the years, I’ve enhanced a number of the features or added them back in to reflect the era it was built.  

My style is a bit more classic with mirrored coffee tables, fluted TV Unit panelling and ceiling roses with chandeliers in each room.

My favourite feature in my house is the ceiling rose I added to the room. I have beautiful cornices reflective of the 1930s but there were ugly oyster lights in each of the rooms from the '90s so I removed them and installed plaster ceiling roses from the 1930s and hung beautiful crystal chandeliers from them!

One of my favourite purchases ever is the crystal base lamp I have in my lounge room. It was a bit of an investment piece, but it’s absolutely gorgeous.

Master bedroom: I have two bedrooms in my apartment. 

My bedroom is easily my favourite space in my home. It’s got a luxe hotel vibe with textured metallic wallpaper, alabaster table lamps, a custom bedhead in a gorgeous printed linen fabric, art deco-style bedside tables and pewter coloured buffet. 

I have wallpapers in both bedrooms, a customer bedhead for the master and custom lampshades to match the bed in the guest bedroom. 

To make my room a little more unique, I purposefully chose a bedhead in a fabric I knew no one else would have so it’s very much mine and special for my house since I design so many spaces for other people each day.

Kitchen: I’m about to undertake a renovation of the kitchen and bathroom to update them and slightly modify the layouts.

But I have got dark chocolate stained floorboards throughout my home that are not going anywhere, that I love! The only downside is they show dust a lot faster than a lighter floorboard colour so I need to clean more to get rid of the dirt. To keep my floors in tip-top shape, I keep my Wertheim Evolution MAX Stick Vacuum in the kitchen charging when not in use, and it means I can do a super fast clean of the house in about 10 minutes. When I got the vacuum, I loved it because it’s so slimline and doesn’t take up a tonne of space in my house. So in truth, I can just pull it out of the cupboard and do a quick zoom around the house to clean up. It has great power for such a quieter clean, and it's perfect for my hard floors to pick up all of mine (and my dog's hair).

I'm a bit obsessed with it really (ha!), I'm so proud of our space, and it does a stellar job at keeping it beautiful. 

I’m actually a bit of a neat enthusiast (comes with the territory) so I’m always doing a quick clean before leaving for work each day or cleaning up before heading to bed. 

Bathrooms: I have one bathroom in my house and I like to keep it in pristine condition. With a dog and myself, it can get a little bit chaotic sometimes if I don't stay on top of it. But it has a lot of art deco features that made me fall in love with it when I saw the apartment for the first time. It was one of the spaces I knew I wouldn't be changing when I moved in! 

My advice to anyone looking to make their apartment or house their own is to display things that are meaningful to you. Because they will become the story telling piece in your house that people notice when walking through. It can spark a conversation about a trip you took or the places you've been and the people you have met. 

I’m all for injecting personality and character into my client’s homes with things they’ve collected in their travels or been given by friends or family to mark a milestone in their life or birthday.
