Surely having a "great character" makes him more dangerous? If you're a "great guy" women are more likely to trust you which makes it more likely you'll be in the position to offend, and also victims less likely to come forward. At the point of sentencing it's been established he's guilty so all these people willing to vouch for him actually makes him seem more dangerous! How could a judge read these statements and not feel sick.
