@sonja.raath Hi Sonja, thank you for your comment and kind words. I've read lots of books about addiction, but not that one, so thanks for the recommendation!

@justine hey Justine :) You've probably heard this answer before, but it really is up to the individual to want to change their behaviour. The best you can do as family or friends is just being non-judgemental and letting them know that you're there for them for support. If they're unaware of the resources available to them, including detox, inpatient treatment, outpatient treatment, etc, then you can make them aware of those options in a compassionate way, without pressuring them. Ultimately, you can't force someone to be sober, even if you know its for their own good. They have to come to that conclusion on their own. The journey can be long. I've met people who have been in rehab 20+ times. Just offering your support is enough. Thanks for your comment!

@taintedblackcat  hey! Thanks for your comment. I'm sorry to hear about your fibromyalgia. I hadn't heard of it before your comment and it's so interesting the different paths that lead people to use alcohol as a crutch. Thank you for commenting with empathy and understanding :)

@d123 Hey! Thanks for your comment. These conversations can be tricky, especially when putting them into a neat little article, of course there had to be things I left out. One of the reasons I say that is that my brother, who had the exact same upbringing as myself, turned out completely differently - no addictive tendencies at all, no anxiety or detrimental mental health issues. I have a history of addiction in my family, and so I believe I am the way I am because I am genetically predisposed to it, and it worsened as result of adult traumatic events. I didn't mention my family history because I am protective of them and didn't see it as my story to tell. I can tell you I am still sober and currently doing well, thanks for your kind wishes :)
