(Sign) I knew I had to do this… I think you overthink or over complicate the things in the movie with cop outs. I won't act like this movie isn't dark or creepy but IMO, it doesn't go bloody, it doesn't go too gritty or sexual. It's just unsettling or uncanny but yes, some kids can't handle uncanny stuff, however there are far worse kids movies out there that are more bloodier and more disturbing like The Dark Crystal, or Watership Down, Something Wicked This Way Comes, Neverending Story or The Plague Dogs. Those films had death, blood, and actual horror. (Also unlike those films, when there's a scary moment, it's followed by a light-hearted comedy to balance it out and still has genuine heart and emotions.) There's a great interview by the director talking about the movie and he said making it scary was not his intention and really, I can see his point because EVERY aspect with this film was at the very least mentioned somewhere in the original books the movies are based on. The books do have quite dark and strange things sometimes and Walter Merch was just recreating what Frank L. Baum created it as closely as possible. (So get out here with your "OMG THIS FILM IS TOO DARK!" crap. Especially if you're saying Jack Pumpkinhead or Tick-Tock is too scary when they weren't to begin with. Which again, you're overthinking or just a overprotective parent)

And if you see the original movie, you can see dark images there, but like what Murch said, because it has songs, because it's clearly men painted to look like creatures, there's that disconnect with reality and as such, makes it less scary. Although people were too scared of the original film back then too so whatever. The movie is indeed a love letter to the books and I believe Frank L. Baum understands that kids can not only handle a bit of darkness in their fiction but actually enjoy it and Walter Murch recreated that beautifully. Yes it's dark and creepy, but it's an amazing recreation of the books and anyone who says "This film is too dark for kids! Nope!" (Especially Siskel and Ebert) are quite frankly talking out of their ASS! Kids are stronger than you give them credit for judging this post. The villains for this film, The Nome King, Mombi and the Wheelers are etched into people's mind's for a reason. They're damn good villains, I don't think anyone watching this for the first time ever doubted what these characters were capable of. They are always given the right amount of gravitas and never reduced to punchlines and of course, they were made scary which is important to the story. And I hope it's well remembered by people in the future as much as the original movie IMO.
