This spring, I’ll be looking for a mix of statement and classic pieces to complement my transitional wardrobe, but I won’t be breaking my two cardinal rules of buying new shoes: they must be well-made (because I have no interest in spending my hard-earned dollars on something that won’t last me through summer), and they must fit properly (because I have no interest in punishing my poor feet when all they’ve ever done is walk me places without complaint).

It just so happens that ballet flats are the perfect trans-seasonal shoe, equally with pants and a trench as with a skirt in the warmer weather. Which is lucky, because ballet flats are a huge trend for this spring, popping up on every runway from here to Milan. 

If you’re like me, and haven’t worn a ballet flat for a few years, my best advice is to start with a classic, and this black and white pair is about as classic as you can get.

If you’ve been living under a rock all winter, then I have good news: it’s not too late to jump on the Barbiecore trend, and these incredible pink statement heels are just the way to do it. 

The slingback and peep toe give a warm-weather vibe while still offering a solid amount of support (for those of us who, erm, might be out of the habit of wearing heels and need a bit of help). Dress them down with pale denim and a white linen shirt for a sophisticated look with a pop of colour, or fully commit to the spring vibe with a flouncy floral dress.

Micro-heels are one of this spring’s biggest trends, which is a huge relief for the ankles of the nation. These combine another trend, the woven look, with seasonal colours (hello turquoise!) and, frankly, they just look like shoes that someone would wear while having a darn good time. 

I can imagine this pair dressed down for work with a slim black suit or dressed up for a garden party with a flouncy red dress – the possibilities are endless.

Red Mary Janes are making huge waves in the fashion world right now, and it’s not hard to see why. They’re equal parts fun, fresh and feminine, which couldn’t be more perfect for spring. 

I particularly love the touch of sparkle on this pair, which give me playful Dorothy-inspired vibes. I’d wear these with a floaty white linen dress to let them shine (and throw in a cherry-red lip if you really want to wow).

The statement ballet flat is huge this spring, and these pink and orange flats certainly make a statement. 

Orange is making a big comeback this season too, with orange sneakers all over the runways. But, for something a little more pared back and sophisticated, you can’t go wrong with the pop of colour this pair gives any outfit. I’m itching to style these with a basic black pant or jean so they really draw the eye.

It wouldn’t be a spring shoe fashion wrap-up without the ubiquitous sneaker, which seems to follow us from season to season (and long may it reign). 

This spring, I’ll be mixing up the classic cool white of last season’s most popular sneakers with creamier tones, which nicely reflect the warmer months. This pair is neutral enough to be worn with almost anything while eye-catching enough to be a feature piece in their own right.
