The 7 rules for nails in 2024.

Yes! Big call, we know. But it's true. Short nails are having a moment. And you know how it is — nail trends come and go. From Japanese manicures and French manicures to the buzz around BIAB and press-on nails — styles, shapes and nail designs are forever changing. And honestly, we're here for it.

It keeps things fresh. Exciting. Fun.

Watch: We're all guilty of the endless, endless tapping when we have our nails done. Here's a quick glimpse into what life is like with and without nails. Post continues below.

So, if you're wondering what to get for your next manicure appointment, we've got you sorted. Because we've pulled together a round-up of all the manicure trends that are in — and those that are definitely out.

From jewel tones to pick-and-mix nails, here's how you'll be wearing your nails in the years ahead.

1. Short nails.

We're calling it: 2024 is the year of short, simple nails. It's officially time for long nails to find a spot on the bench.

Off the back of the shift towards natural, neat and 'clean' looking nails, in 2024 your manicure is getting a serious makeup under, with short, simple nails coming out on top. (We can almost hear our bank accounts celebrating).

Short nails will reign supreme — with the classic squoval (a soft combination of square and oval) nails coming out on top as the preferred shape. And look, while we love jazzy nail art and long OTT nails, there's just something about short nails that just makes you look so polished and chic.

So, expect to see a rise in simple designs, sheer, pearlescent colours and clear shades — perfect for that barely-there elegance.

2. Jewel tones.

From metallic gold to silver, jewel tones and mirrored polish are going to be on everyone's fingertips in 2024.

As Pinterest's yearly predictions for 2024 said, "Cool silver tones and bold chrome are resonating right now. Melty metallics will make their way into the mainstream in 2024 as people trade in their trusty neutrals for something a bit more hardcore. Gen Z and Millennials are driving this heavy metal aesthetic."

The best part? It's a stylish and super versatile trend, and can easily elevate any look.

3. Duo-chrome.

Whether you're team long nails or short, we can all agree that chrome nails absolutely exploded in 2023, thanks to Hailey Bieber and her #glazeddonutnails. This year, the buzz around chrome continues — but not as you know it.

Enter: Duo-chrome nails.

All about layering metallics or chrome nail polishes, Y2k-inspired duo-chrome nails are having a serious moment. The best part about this trend? There's lots of room to play when it comes to shades and finishes. If you want to find some inspiration for your next manicure appointment, check out 'duo chrome nails' on Instagram or TikTok.

4. Bows.

According to Pinterest's yearly predictions, 2024 will be the year of the bow — and we're not just talking about hair accessories.

Yes, bows. On your nails. Whether you opt for DIY stick-on bow accents, intricate nail art or some jazzy 3D embellishments (you'll probably need to see a salon professional for these), this coquette-inspired trend is popping up everywhere — from our social feeds to the red carpet. Both parts girly and playful and, it's all about embracing your soft, romantic side.

5. Pick-and-mix nails.

Why pick one when you can have them all? If you're looking for a unique, fun nail look — this one's for you. Because 'everything nails' are here to stay — just search 'everything nails' on Instagram or TikTok. It's inspiration galore.

Mixing colour palettes, textures, shades and designs, it's fresh, fun and the perfect way to add a pop of creativity to your look without trying.

6. Chocolate nails.

If a complete colour on your nails is more your thing, why not try chocolate brown nails.

It's bold, versatile and stylish, and we reckon it's about to be the 'It' colour of the year. You heard it here first. So, expect to see plenty of variations getting around.

Whether you prefer dark, milk, or a rich creamy brown, if you're looking to DIY simply start with a nail polish of your choice as your base, before adding a glossy topcoat to ramp up the decadence. Drool.

7. Blue nails.

Similar to the explosion of chocolate nails, blue is another shade that's everywhere right now, with Pinterest dubbing it the official colour of the year — with everything from aquamarine makeup on trend.

Want to get on board? Try either a bold electric blue or a softer marine or hazy blue (look up 'blueberry milk nails' on Instagram or TikTok) next time you're at the salon.

Would you try any of the above nail trends? What are your thoughts? Share them with us in the comment section below.

I just cut my long almond-shaped nails short before reading this!
I have been wearing my nails long in either a stiletto or almond shape for nearly 10 years.
I'm turning 34 this year and feel like I want to tone down my wardrobe and thus my nails which are an accessory, of course. So short nails in soft neutral colours will be my jam for the year.
I think on me, they look much more sophisticated....is that the right word?

Whoohoo finally my short nails are “in” 😅 Not that I care! lol I struggle to understand how people can do every day things with those long nails! I love the look of them but I need to be practical (especially being a mum of three!).
