Let’s be real: when it comes to Jon Snow’s real name and his parentage we knew nothing.
Until the final episode of season six, that is.
Game of Thrones fans rejoiced when the show’s longest-running fan theory was finally confirmed earlier this week: Jon Snow is actually the son of Lyanna Stark (aka Ned’s sister) and Rhaegar Targaryen.

But it seems there was more to be revealed about the new King in the North… like, I don’t know, HIS REAL NAME!
Lyanna ends her plea to Ned with, “If Robert finds out…Promise me you’ll protect him”, but it’s the words she mumbled to her big brother BEFORE making him promise to adopt Jon as his own that has fans talking.
Redditor Claire Williams claims to have watched the scene in question over 50 times, and says Lyanna introduces her newborn son to Ned as “Jaehaerys”.
The name would indeed be fitting for an heir of the Targaryen throne – in Westerosi history, Jaehaerys is the fourth Targaryen king to sit on the Iron Throne, and is known as ‘the Wise’ King.
It’s thought that Ned renamed his ‘son’ so a) no-one would guess Jon wasn’t actually his, obvs and b) as a tribute to his father figure Jon Arryn. Oh Ned, you big softie!
Now begins the long wait until next season, so we can finally get Jon a copy of his birth certificate. With his REAL name, of course.
