1. Husband charged over cold case double murders at a Portland hairdresser.

An elderly man charged with murdering his wife and another woman at a hairdressers in 1991 is expected to apply for bail this afternoon.

Robert Penny, 83, was supported by his new wife as he appeared at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court today over the double murder of Margaret Penny and Claire Acocks, the Herald Sun reports.

Last year, police honed in on Mr Penny as the prime suspect in the killings – a claim he vigorously denied.

The two women were found dead at the Old London Coiffure Hairdressers in the small coastal town of Portland on May 3, 1991, after being brutally stabbed and beaten.

Mr Penny’s lawyer told the court his client would apply for bail in the Supreme Court.

2. Tributes pour in for the 13-year-old victim of a fatal shark attack.

A beachfront tribute to a 13-year-old surfer killed on Sunday in a brutal shark attack has attracted hundreds of people, Sky News reports.

Keen surfer Elio Canestri was surfing in an off-limits section off the west coast of the French Indian Ocean island of Réunion when the fatal attack occurred.

It is the 16th shark attack around the island since 2011 and the seventh fatal one.

Rescuers could not save the boy, who professional surfer Jeremy Flores described as “one of our best up and coming” surfers in a tribute on Facebook.

3. PM pays $250 a week for his daughter to stay in Kirribilli  House.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott will pay taxpayers more than $13,000 a year for his youngest daughter’s board at Kirribilli House.

Bridget Abbott, 23, is now working as a graduate radiologist so the PM is paying an undisclosed sum – believed to be more than $250 a week – for her to remain at the harbour-side property, The Daily Telegraph reports.

“My daughter, Bridget ­Abbott, is undertaking her professional year as a graduate radiologist,” Mr Abbott said.

“She is therefore no longer a dependant under ­entitlements.”

Mr Abbott earns more than $500,000 a year as Prime Minister.

Former PM John Howard had a similar arrangement when his youngest daughter continued to live in the prime location while working as a lawyer.

4. Tourists charged after allegedly attempting to set fire to quokka on Rottnest Island.

Two tourists have been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly attempting to set fire to a quokka on Rottnest Island.

Two men, aged 18 and 24, reportedly were using a lighter and aersosol spray which singed the quokka, ABC News reports.

Detectives seized video evidence and interviewed the two men before laying charges of animal cruelty.

They will appear in Fremantle Magistrates’ Court later this week.

Quokkas are endangered marsupials protected under state and federal legislation. They are mostly found on Rottnest Island off Perth.

5. Luke Shambrook released from hospital.

An autistic boy who survived five days alone lost in the Victorian bush has returned home.

Luke Shambrook, 11, was found last Tuesday, suffering from dehydration and hypothermia, at Lake Eildon National Park, three kilometres from where he went missing.

He was treated at Royal Children’s Hospital and has since been released.
