If you ran into your partner on the street, you would say hello. The same thing would happen if you saw your sister, or your cousin, or your aunt and uncle.
But what if your family member wasn’t at eye level, walking towards you with a confident stride on the way to their next important engagement?
What if your family member was sleeping rough?
This experiment by New York Rescue Mission asks exactly that: if a family member was homeless, would we recognise them? Or would we ignore them in the same way that we manage to ignore many of our cities’ most struggling citizens?
The answer is expected. And heartbreaking.

I actually have experienced this first hand, my cousin is currently homeless due to a number of personal issues. I saw him sleeping rough at the train station. We sat and talked and I offered him my help but he was too proud to accept. Broke my heart.
wow, that opened my eyes a little. I see the homeless a lot, but have never really stopped to think about their story, and how they got to where they are. not all of them are druggies. thank you for sharing
