Geena Davis was married to Jeff Goldblum for just 3 years. It was a 'magical chapter' of her life.

In the 1980s, there were a bunch of 'It' couples. Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford. Madonna and Sean Penn. Bruce Willis and Demi Moore. And another couple you could add to the very long list include Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis.

Davis and Goldblum first met on the set of horror/comedy film Transylvania 6-5000 in 1985. There was a connection at 'first sight'.

Goldblum later said he felt nervous during their first encounter because he instantly wanted her to really like him.

"I'm sitting there watching the dailies, and Ed Begley Jr. [their fellow Transylvania 6-5000 co-star] comes into the screening room with this stunning, this gorgeous girl, gorgeously shy. He starts to introduce her to everyone in the room, clockwise. I'm last, and by the time they get to me I'm thinking, 'Unnh, ahh, oh, this is bad, this is awful, I really like this woman and she's not going to like me. How can I ever make her like me?'" he recounted to GQ in 1989.

As for Davis the interest was reciprocated, but she was shy - worried he wouldn't realise that she in fact did really like him. Only on their first date did she reveal her true feelings.

"Finally, he takes me out to dinner one night, all serious, he says, 'We can't see each other anymore. I really like you, and you don't like me.' So I say, 'No, I really like you, too,' and that was it. I have this idea about people in your life. I think you recognise them, that they're right for you. I recognised Jeff."

By 1987, the pair were married.

It was a Las Vegas wedding ceremony that was organised very last minute at a chapel at 2am.

And Davis recounted the event - while still married - with not much romantic hindsight.

"Jeff says, 'Why not?' and they all start heading for a taxi. I'm like, 'Wait, you're kidding, right?' and I burst into tears. See, I was a girl who cut wedding-gown pictures out of magazines. Jeff takes me outside, I calm down and start to think it would be fun, but I'm afraid I've wrecked it by crying. But finally about 2am we all go off and do it. We have this nightmare video. We all look slightly stunned," she said of the wedding ceremony.

As for Jeff, he saw it a little differently. Romantic and spontaneous.

"Geena made love, falling in love, so easy," he said.

"She's purely loving, beguiling - irresistible. Steps would be taken gradually sometimes, and sometimes it swept along. And, of course, I'm wildly attracted to her. Wildly attracted. We'd talk about marriage, bring up the idea more and more often over a period of months. We could, we should, wouldn't it be romantic? We would act out small scenes of life together: 'Hi, honey, you got some mail today.' It was very sexy."

Over the next few years, they continued to make movies together including The Fly and Earth Girls Are Easy

And from the outside, things were going well in their relationship, the couple often attending red carpets together and giving very gushy quotes to news outlets about their marriage.

But by 1990, Goldblum and Davis announced they were separating, with Davis citing irreconcilable differences in court.

The pair did not have children together, and Goldblum later alluded to the fact that his hesitation to have kids was a sore point in their marriage.

Goldblum later said he had "never really wanted to have kids".

Addressing the split a year later, Geena told PEOPLE they "certainly had high hopes" when they married and had "every good intention". But unfortunately, things had not gone according to plan, which she said was "deeply upsetting".

The pair however stayed in contact with one another soon after their divorce, saying they still regularly phoned one another and met up in person occassionally.

Reflecting on the relationship, Davis said to PEOPLE this week: "It was joyful. It really was. That was a magical chapter in my life. It was great."

Fast forward two decades, and the former couple's lives have changed drastically.

Davis went on to marry director Renny Harlin from 1993 to 1998, and then married her fourth husband Reza Jarrahy in 2001. They had three children together - Alizeh, Kaiis, and Kian. The couple then split in 2017.

As for Goldblum, he has been married to former Olympian and rhythmic gymnast Emilie Goldblum (née Livingston) since 2014. The pair first met in 2011 and announced their engagement a few months before they married.

Since their wedding, they've had two sons together - Charlie Ocean in 2015 and River Joe in 2017.

Recently, Goldblum said to Radio Times that he had "never been particularly passionate" about fatherhood before having Charlie and River. Goldblum was 62 when he first became a dad.

"I never thought that I was going to do it. I had never been particularly passionate [about fatherhood] or envisioned it for myself – I don't have any nieces or nephews, had never seen a birth before," he explained.

"In the couple of lovely previous marriages I had, there was some fantasy talk about it, but never any serious business. And I always thought it was a good thing that I didn't have any drama with kids and breaking up. I feel right on schedule and I love our two boys. Everything seemed to happen perfectly. I appreciate it wildly."
