If you’re a big fan of true crime, chances are you’re currently obsessed over all things Dirty John.

Based on the popular Los Angeles Times podcast of the same name, the Netflix series follows the true story of Debra Newell and John Meehan, who married just two months after meeting on an online dating site.

When Debra met John, she thought he was a charismatic, handsome, successful anaesthesiologist who had just returned from a year working in Iraq with Doctors Without Borders.

But in reality, John turned out to be very, very different from who he claimed to be.

As Dirty John recounts, John Meehan turned out to be a manipulator, a con artist and a compulsive liar with a violent side.

Now, following on from the success of Dirty John, Netflix have released a new documentary which delves even deeper into John Meehan and his long criminal past.

The documentary, titled Dirty John: The Dirty Truth features interviews with Debra Newell and her two daughters Jacquelyn and Terra Newell as well as John’s ex wife Tonia Sells and other women who were tormented by John.

Within the documentary, Newport Beach-based businesswoman Debra describes what drew her to John.

“I met John online. One thing about John’s profile that I recall is that everything I was looking for in a man seemed to be in his profile,” she explained.

“I wanted a men that went to church, someone that was into his family, successful, intelligent. I’m looking at this thinking ‘John’s a great catch’,” she continued.

“He’s a doctor, he seems so genuine.”

The documentary also looks into a number of John’s other crimes, including burglary, stalking and extortion.

Dirty John: The Dirty Truth is available to watch on Netflix now.
