The other day I went to the beach with some friends and I saw something that I have to talk about.
There was a group of young boys and girls. If I had to take a guess at their age I’d say early high school. Maybe year 7 or 8.
There was a little bit of awkward flirting going on and it was kind of cute.
Then the girls brought out the tanning oil. And started lathering it on.
And it hit me harder than I thought it would.
To be fair, I’ve only just started using sunscreen and being more sun-safe. I used to be the girl that would go out for the whole day in the sun with not a scrap of sunscreen on my body. Nada. I’d burn (maybe) but the red would disappear almost instantly and I’d tan straight away.
I love being in the sun and going for a swim when I feel some sweat coming on. I love spending the day with my friends at the beach. But I was always slack with sunscreen. As in, I never applied it. I would flat out refuse to.

I too, used to often go to the beach or pool and forget to apply sunscreen. And worse, I used to use solariums regularly in the early 2000s. I really wish I hadn't though, as last year I was diagnosed with melanoma on my scalp. I had the mole cut off but then a few months ago it appeared in my lymph nodes. I had surgery to remove them and they cut from the top of my ear to my collarbone. A couple of days before Christmas, I finished a month of having radiotherapy 5 days a week. I still have mouth and throat blisters and ulcers, have no taste, and my skin is sore, dark angry red, bleeds easily and is peeling on my neck where I had the radiation. Fingers crossed it wont come back, but chances are that it will. I now face a future of scans every 12 weeks to monitor for the next few years at least and every time I'm putting something in my calendar, I have to work around Dr's appointments and those check ups. I try not to think about how I may have prevented it by remembering to apply and skip those sunbeds and it makes me angry when I see people being so careless with their health. I hope they wont have to go through the same as I have (and continue to) before they wake up to themselves.
I think it is human nature to take our health for granted until something goes wrong - you're certainly not alone in that. I really hope it all works out for the best for you. Sending positive energy your way :)
