There are 3 surprising things you're doing wrong with your hair, according to a hairstylist.

When you've been working in the beauty industry for some time, there aren't too many things that surprise you (other than lube being used as primer, of course).

So when Leigh Campbell and I were chatting about a popular hairstylist's top hair tips on this week's episode of You Beauty, we were shocked to discover we'd both been doing things a little... wrong.

Yes, really!

Watch: Speaking of hair, here are 7 things that will up your hair game. Post continues below.

Now, if you are on the same side of Instagram and TikTok that we are, you've seen the incredible Matt Newman on your feed — aka Matt Loves Hair

Not only does he love hair, but he has the BEST hair. So, he must be doing something right.

He's a hairstylist who's based in the US and he regularly shares tips, tricks and reviews across his social media accounts. And goodness, I could sit and watch them for hours.

So informative! So surprising! So much shiny hair!

And because we all love to read about the things we're probably doing wrong in our beauty routines, I thought I'd share some of the most surprising nuggets that Leigh and I just couldn't get past.

Here's the hair mistakes you need to know about, immediately.

So, please. Take a seat.

#1. Don't apply dry shampoo directly at the roots.

We are not okay. Who else has been applying dry shampoo to their roots for like, ever? Because SAME.

*Cry face*

According to Newman, parting the hair and applying dry shampoo right at the roots isn't the best approach.

"Don't aim your dry shampoo at your scalp — it's not good for your skin," he said.

Instead, he said that you should apply it to the top of the hair and let it sink/in soak through, and massage with your fingertips for best results.

"Target just below the root to help minimise the build-up on the scalp."

We just...

#2. Use bobby pins for instant volume.

Put that volumising spray down, friend. Because there's an easier way to add a wee bit of oomph to your hair without using products. And I reckon pretty much every celebrity who's ever walked a red carpet knows about it.

"It's like the ultimate volume side part hack," said Newman.

All you need is a bobby pin.

You section your hair into a side part, then flick the part to the opposite side (why are hair techniques always so hard to explain? What am I, a writer or something?), then you're going to slide the bobby pin about a centimetre from the part, before flipping your side part back into place.

The result? Instant volume for your flick.

#3. Stop applying hair serum straight to your hair.

Your hair oil. How do you apply it?

Hands up if you usually just pump some product into your hands/fingertips and apply it straight to your hair.

I do.

And now it actually makes a lot of sense why I always feel like it looks 'too much' on my hair (read: makes my fresh hair look like I didn't actually wash it) (sad).

But apparently applying hair oil (or hair serum) directly to your hair is a big no-no.

Newman said, "Hair oils work best when you break them down really well on your palms and then gently work it in. Don't put hair serums straight from the bottle onto your hair."

Eeeep.

"Most oil-based or serum-based products are going to perform best when you break them down really well on your palms and then gently work it in," Newman said.

So, make sure you really emulsify your hair serums in your hands by rubbing your palms together thoroughly before applying it through your hair evenly.

Class dismissed!
