'I watch TV for work. Here are 10 of the best new shows you definitely haven't watched yet.'

My idea of a perfect weekend is watching an entire TV series... or two.

Thankfully, I've managed to make it part of my ~ personal brand ~ so I no longer feel bad about hiding in my apartment all weekend, watching strangers solve murders on the telly.

This means I've basically watched every new TV show that's come out this year and I can tell you exactly what's worth your time and what's not. So, you know, bookmark this page for your future, super-organised self. (P.S. if you'd like to see my weekly recommendations, follow me on Instagram).

Here are the best new TV shows you're probably not watching:

Karen Pirie

Karen Pirie is possibly the best murder mystery I've watched this year.

Adapted from Val McDermid's series of books, the Scottish thriller follows young DS Karen Pirie (Lauren Lyle). After a true crime podcast about the unsolved murder of a 19-year-old girl in 1996 goes viral, Pirie is assigned to lead the re-investigation into the case.

Three local university students found Rosie Duff bleeding to death in a cemetery after a night out in 1996. While they were the prime suspects, no one was ever charged in relation to Duff's murder.

Now in their 40s, the three former friends find themselves back under suspicion.

The Dry

The Dry fits into the TV genre I like to call 'messy British/Irish/Scottish/Welsh women and their funny families'.

Yep, if you loved Fleabag, you'll be a fan of The Dry

The Irish comedy-drama follows Shiv Sheridan as she returns to Dublin after years of partying in London. Shiv is determined to get sober and get her life back on track, if only her family would believe her.

The Dry is a hilarious, poignant and unexpected series about grief, the impact of trauma, and second chances.

Abbott Elementary

If The Office and Parks and Recreation had a wholesome baby in the middle of the pandemic, the result would be Abbott Elementary

Abbott Elementary takes us behind-the-scenes of a fictional elementary school in Baltimore, where the teachers are underpaid and overworked, and there's not enough money to buy even the most basic of supplies.

But don't worry, this series is anything but a downer. The "mockumentary" style of filming, plus the Michael Scott-esque principal, the burgeoning love story between two of the junior teachers, and the genuine friendships between the characters mean you'll be laughing out loud one minute and genuinely moved by the wholesomeness of it all the next.

Maggie

Maggie is the kind of TV show that will just make you feel good.

It has a similar vibe to Drop Dead Diva and Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist

The series follows 30-something Maggie (Rebecca Rittenhouse), a psychic who accidentally meets Ben, the man she's supposed to marry when he asks her for a reading.

The only problem is Ben has an on again/off again long-term girlfriend and Maggie's not supposed to be able to see her own future.

After Ben and Maggie spend a night together, Ben and his girlfriend move into another apartment in the complex Maggie's parents own.

Cue lots of will they/won't they, quirky side characters, and funny one-liners from Maggie's parents.

Wedding Season

Wedding Season is like Four Weddings and a Funeral meets Imposters meets... the mob. So basically, lots of weddings but also quite a bit of murder and deceit.

When Katie and Stefan meet each other at a wedding, they have an instant connection. They decide to keep seeing each other, even though Katie is engaged to be married.

Two months later, at Katie's wedding, her new husband and his entire family are murdered.

The police immediately suspect Stefan, while Stefan suspects Katie.

Somebody, Somewhere

It's not often that you find a TV show that's both laugh out loud funny and so bloody touching, it'll leave you in tears at the most unexpected moments.

But that's exactly what comedian Bridget Everett's semi-autobiographical series Somebody, Somewhere is.

The series, which was created by Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen and is loosely based on Everett's own life, follows the story of Sam (Everett) a woman who moved back to her small hometown to look after her sister who has terminal cancer.

After her sister dies, Sam reassesses her place in the world and begins to connect with a group of local misfits.

Somebody, Somewhere is a series about grief, failure, adult friendships, and finding hope in the most unexpected places.

Industry

Industry is the kind of TV show you won't understand for the first few episodes and then suddenly you'll be hooked.

The British drama follows a group of young graduates competing for permanent positions at Pierpoint & Co, a prestigious investment bank in London. They do things with money and computers and make stressful phone calls and they also have a lot of sex.

It's kind of like Succession meets... Grey's Anatomy

Tell Me Lies

In her first week at college, Lucy (Grace Van Patten) meets Stephen. She's immediately drawn to him, while he broods in the corner of every party.

As their relationship unfolds, their friends navigate sex, relationships, privilege and the mystery surrounding the death of Lucy's roommate.

It's kind of like Felicity meets Normal People but more... toxic.

Tell Me Lies is streaming on Disney Plus.

Chloe

Chloe is one of the best thrillers to come out of Britain in recent years.

The six-part series follows the story of Becky, a mousy woman who works in a temp job and still lives at home with her mother. Becky spends her evenings pouring over the Instagram account of a woman named Chloe, who is married to a local council member.

When Chloe dies under suspicious circumstances, Becky infiltrates her friendship circle to find out what really happened to her.

Chloe is a captivating thriller about female friendship, the lies we tell ourselves and the ties that bind us.

Chloe is streaming on Prime Video.

Reasonable Doubt

Reasonable Doubt is here to fill the Scandal-shaped hole in your life.

Created and directed by Kerry Washington (yes, THE Olivia Pope) the crime thriller follows Jax Stewart (Emayatzy Corinealdi) a defence attorney living in LA, who bends the justice system to help out her high-profile clients.

Oh, and she also has a lot of steamy sex with her estranged husband and numerous other love interests.

Reasonable Doubt is streaming on Disney Plus.
