The tale is a retelling of an Arthurian legend, set in Great Britain in the period of late antiquity, following the Roman occupation and taking place during the conflict with the Saxons.

This is long before Britain was united — instead, the country was divided into various tribes.

The Winter King focuses on Arthur (played by Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D actor, Iain De Caestecker), a bastard son who must fight to become heir to the Dumnonian throne in a powerful story of courage and sacrifice.

The series was filmed in Wales and the West Country, with sets erected in Patchway and Blaise Castle Estate.

We've seen a preview of the epic's first episode and this show is going to be HUGE. This gritty take on the King Arthur legend we all know so well is giving Game of Thrones meets Merlin

It's got it all: love, betrayal, chaotic fight scenes, and did we mention, plenty of steamy sex.

This is going to be an ideal series for any history buffs because aside from the King Arthur mythology, the series reflects some of the biggest turning points in Great Britain's checkered history.

Iain De Caestecker is an Arthur unlike any depictions we've seen before: he's raw, he's real, he's human. Far removed from the otherworldly Arthur commonly seen in TV and films, this Arthur spends the first episode beaten up, bruised and covered in blood.

As we said, this is a very gritty Arthurian tale.

Along with Scottish actor Iain De Caestecker, the series will also star Eddie Marsan (The Thief, Deceit), Ellie James (Giri/Haji), Nathaniel Martello-White (I Hate Suzie), Stuart Campbell (Rogue Heroes, Clique), Daniel Ings (I Hate Suzie, The Crown), Valene Kane (The Fall, Gangs of London), Simon Merrells (Good Omens), along with Jordan Alexandra as Guinevere.

The ensemble cast includes Steven Elder (The King), Andrew Gower (Outlander), Aneirin Hughes (Keeping Faith), Emily John (My Policeman), Tatjana Nardone (Devils), Ken Nwosu (Killing Eve), and Billy Postlethwaite (The Great, Chernobyl)

The Winter King was directed by Peaky Blinders' Otto Bathurst, and executive producer by Billy The Kid's Toby Leslie. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television-owned Bad Wolf.

The Winter King is streaming now only on Stan.
