The women of SNL said they wouldn't write a 'feminist song'. Except they did.

The hilarious women of Saturday Night Live decided it was too hard to write a feminist song… so they wrote “not a feminist song” instead.

They unveiled the tune on Saturday’s edition of the popular talk show, and it’s every bit as hilarious as you’d hope.

The SNL stars — Aidy Bryant, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Sasheer Zamata, alongside guest host Ariana Grande — start the song by explaining how they originally tried to write a song about women’s empowerment, but found that too challenging.

Feminism is “pretty nuanced stuff” and it’s too hard to address women’s diverse struggles in the one tune, they decided.

So they resolved to create “not a feminist song,” and to just feature cliche images such as women running in the sand and a lot of moody lens flare effects in their video instead.

Their decision to avoid writing a “feminist song” was driven by fear that they’d make a mistake if they tried to address everybody’s feminist concerns at once: “This is not a feminist song, ’cause we were scared we would do it wrong,” they explained.

WATCH the song here. Post continues after video…

Towards the end of the clip, the women realise their song actually is actually feminist and change their chorus to “this is a feminist song”. Cue: A lot of fist-pumping and dancing on the beach.

We’re glad the women SNL embraced their feminist side in the end. (Especially when a a men’s rights activist pops into the video and asks why men aren’t allowed in the song. Their response is hilarious.)

Well played, SNL ladies. Well played.
