We’ve rounded up the biggest stories from Australia and around the world – and a few that aren’t so big.

1. A teenage girl has been shot outside a Sydney Hungry Jacks.

A 17-year-old girl has been shot dead outside a Hungry Jacks at Hoxton Park, in Sydney’s West.

News.com.au is reporting that paramedics attempted to revive the girl, but the girl died at the scene.

The police have blocked off the roads and are expected to make a statement shortly.

2. Six Ministers voted against PM.

After a humbling near miss yesterday the Prime Minister has promised his partyroom that he will fix things.

But it seems that the PM might be in for a short ride with reports that at least six ministers voted against him. 39 out of 101 Liberal MPs and senators voted for the spill yesterday – a number that has many calling the Prime Minster a “dead man walking”.

In an interview with 7.30 last night he repeated a statement he made to the party room earlier yesterday “I am hopeless at fighting the Liberal Party, I am brilliant at fighting the Labor Party.”

Former Howard government minister Peter Reith told Sky News that there was a continued threat to the Prime Minister of losing his position as a “serious number” of the ministry would peel away from him now because the vote against him was so high. Those supporting Malcolm Turnbull say they will wait until after the May budget  before pushing for him to replace the Prime Minister.

 3. Mother dies in car crash while children are trapped for 9 hours.

A tragic car accident in NSW with a mother dead and two children trapped in her car with her for nine hours.

Tragic news out of Bega.

Police on the NSW South Coast report that the woman’s husband reported his wife missing at 6.30pm last night after he had not heard from her since 9.45am.

About 7.30pm police were notified of a vehicle on its roof in the area.

A search of the car located the mother sitting in the driver’s seat, deceased, and her 4-month-old baby girl and 2-year-old girl in the back seat.

Luckily the two girls were alive and suffered only minor injuries.

The children were taken to Bega District Hospital for observation.

4. Bali 9 family members meet with human rights commission in Jakarta.

The families of Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran have flown to Jakarta and met with the human rights body, Komnas HAM in Jakarta.

In an emotional plea they also held a press conference where they begged Indonesia’s President and the Government to spare the lives of their sons.

Sukumaran’s brother Chinthu said “It is probably our last chance to ask the President to give these guys a second chance and want them to know exactly what these two boys are doing inside the prison.”

5. Murdered Mum feared for her life for months.

Murdered mother of two Adelle Collins, 39 feared for her safety according to The Courier Mail and had warned friends about her ex-partner.

Adelle Collins was allegedly stabbed to death by her ex-partner Steven Storie, 45 on the weekend, police finding her dead on Saturday morning.

According to reports she had previously posted a warning on Facebook. “Steven and I are officially separated … Please be wary of odd friend requests as things are getting nasty, I am following this up with the appropriate authorities,”

“It should have happened years ago, long time overdue … I’m feeling very positive about my future.”

Mr Storie was charged with murder, entering a premises, wilful damage, threats of violence and stealing.

6. Mother arrested after slapping son.

A mother-of-three has been arrested in Perth for smacking her four-year old son when he was misbehaving in the supermarket.

Her family say she is mortified by the arrest.

 7. Man arrested in relation to death of Georgina Bartter.

A 19-year old man has been arrested in Sydney in relation to the death of Georgina Bartter who died of a suspected drug reaction from taking ecstasy at the Harbourlife festival at Mrs Macquarie’s Chair near Sydney Botanical Gardens on November 8 last year.

The man from Willoughby on Sydney’s North Shore was arrested and charged with supplying prohibited drugs and possessing prohibited drugs.

He was granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on March 25.

8. New information on South African family murders.

The son of a family who had recently moved to South Africa from Perth and were brutally killed in an axe attack reportedly did not call police for four hours after his family were murdered.

The Times reports that the family of Henri Van Breda – his parent’s Martin and Teresa, and his 22-year-old brother, Rudi, were killed at their luxury home on January 27.

Henri and his 16-year old sister survived.

The Times reports that while police believe the attacks happened at 3am Henri did not call emergency services until 7.30am.

It is reported that during this time 16-year old Marli was fighting for her life with severe head injuries and a severed jugular.

There are also unconfirmed reports that the injuries to the arms of Henri Van Breda were self-inflicted.

 9. Teen who died at festival thought to have been in deadly game.

A teenager who died at a rave party on the weekend has been described as a good kid who might have been playing a game to see how much MDMA he could ingest.

Nine News reports that 19-year old Tolga Toksoz collapsed and died a festival in Sydney Olympic Park in Homebush on Saturday.

South Western Metropolitan Regional Commander, Assistant Commissioner Frank Mennilli told Nine News that while it was yet to be confirmed he believed some party-goers had taken a number of pills as a “game” to see how many they could take.

10. Ballina shark attack streamed around the world.

The death of a 41-year old man yesterday at Ballina by what is thought to be a great white shark was streamed around the world live on surf cameras.

Tadashi Nakahara, a father-of-one, died yesterday after being attacked by a 4m shark. His death is the second fatal shark attack in the area in the last five months.

Police are examining footage from the Coastalwatch website cameras to establish what type of shark killed Mr Nakahara reports News Limited.

 11. Teen killed classmate then posed for selfie

A teenager in the US has been charged with murder after posing with a dead body and sending the picture to a friend via Snapchat.

Triblive reports that 16-year old Maxwell Marion Morton, from Pennsylvania, is accused of shooting his classmate Ryan Mangan, 16, in the face.

The victim’s mother found her son dead in her home on Wednesday.

Police say Morton sent a selfie of himself with Mangan’s body to a friend via Snapchat.

The friend screen-shotted the image before it was erased and his mother contacted the police.

Officers say he also allegedly sent text messages that said “Told you I cleaned up the shells” and “Ryan was not the last one.”

Morton is being charged as an adult with first-degree murder, homicide and possession of a firearm by a minor.

 12. Indian intersex woman gives birth to twins.

An Indian intersex woman, with 95% male DNA has given birth to healthy twins after intensive treatment.

Dcotors said it was a “medical miracle.”

The rarest of the rare cases was “akin to a male delivering twins “said her doctor.

The 32-year-old mother has 95% XY chromosomes.

“She did not undergo puberty and never menstruated,” her doctor Mr Jindal said.

“When we investigated further we found that she had a very small vagina and an infantile uterus.”

“Even she did not know she had this condition and was flabbergasted when we told her about it.

“But the husband was very supportive and told her ‘No matter what, you continue to be my wife.'”

The husband’s sperm was used to fertilize a donor egg that was then implanted in the woman’s uterus.

 13. Bravehearts launches campaign on Safe Internet Day.

National child protection advocate Bravehearts launched an online reporting tool called which has been developed in consultation with the Queensland Police Service to allow young people to anonymously provide information on cyber predators.

Bravehearts Founder and CEO Hetty Johnston said ““Join the Dots is a mechanism that empowers young people by giving them the confidence and tools to protect their cyber space from predators while creating a safer online environment for their peers and the next generation,”

14. Drinking wine can help burn fat.

Probably not the news we needed to hear during Febfast but we will take what we can get.

A study, in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry has shown that that drinking wine or red grape juice in moderation was useful in helping obese people manage their health, especially metabolic disorders such as fatty liver.

One of the study’s author’s Neil Shay, a biochemist and molecular biologist from the University of Oregon said that the wine or juice had to be consumed in moderation.

“We didn’t find, and we didn’t expect to, that these compounds would improve body weight,” he said.

“But by boosting the burning of fat, especially in the liver, they may improve liver function in overweight people. If we could develop a dietary strategy for reducing the harmful accumulation of fat in the liver, using common foods like grapes would be good news.”


15. A school is in lockdown as police hunt for an accused murderer.

A Queensland school is in lockdown as police search for a man wanted in connection to the murder of a 27-year-old man in Logan this morning.

The Courier Mail reports that Mabel Park State School has been placed in lockdown as more than a dozen police officers prepare to search it.

Police earlier released a photograph of the man, 34-year-old John Zarnke, who was last seen in a red Holden commodore leaving Golden Street in the early hours of this morning.

The Courier Mail reports a Polair helicopter was circling over Kuraby earlier, in a street where it was believed wanted man Zarnke could have been.

Police are urging the public not to approach Zarnke, but to call 000.
