Bad Sisters

Bad Sisters is hands down one of the best new TV series of 2022.

The series was written by and stars Sharon Horgan, one half of the brilliantly funny Catastrophe

The 10-part series follows the story of the five Garvey sisters. There's Eva (Horgan), the eldest, who took on the maternal role after their parents died. Ursula, a nurse and sensible mum-of-three, who also happens to be having an affair with her photography teacher. There's fierce middle child Bibi (Sarah Greene), and aimless baby of the family Becka (Eve Hewson). And then there's Grace, the only sister who seems to be mourning the premature death of her husband John Paul (Claes Bang).

When the series flashes back six months, we find out why.

Bad Sisters is streaming on Apple TV Plus.

The Patient

The series follows psychotherapist Alan Strauss (Steve Carell) who wakes up one morning chained to an unfamiliar bed. Alan soon discovers that a new client named Sam (Domhnall Gleeson) has kidnapped him so their sessions can be a little more... intimate.

Sam has a problem, you see. He can't stop killing people and he thinks Alan is the only person who can help him.

A taut thriller, The Patient explores grief, power dynamics, and the struggle between good and evil.

The Patient is streaming on Disney Plus.

The Staircase is based on a documentary series based on a true crime.

Yep, it's a true crime turducken.

The mini-series tells the story of wealthy North Carolina business executive Kathleen Peterson (played by Toni Colette), her untimely death at the bottom of a flight of stairs, and the subsequent arrest and conviction of her crime novelist husband Michael (Colin Firth) for her murder.

The series explores all the possible scenarios surrounding Kathleen's death and the impact it's had on her family.

Candy

On a summer day in 1978, on a church volleyball court in the countryside, Candy Montgomery bumped into Allan Gore.

The friends and neighbours had been diving for the same ball and their bodies collided. It was a seemingly innocuous moment for those watching on from the sidelines, but for Candy, it was a revelation.

Allan smelt good. She decided in that moment to initiate an affair with him.

Two years later, Betty Gore, Allan's wife and Candy's friend, was dead and Candy was charged with her murder.

This brilliantly paced true crime series stars Jessica Biel as Candy and Yellowjackets' Melanie Lynskey as Betty.

Chloe

Chloe is one of the best thrillers to come out of Britain in recent years.

The six-part series follows the story of Becky, a mousy woman who works in a temp job and still lives at home with her mother.

Becky spends her evenings pouring over the Instagram account of a woman named Chloe, who is married to a local council member. When Chloe dies under suspicious circumstances, Becky infiltrates her friendship circle to find out what really happened to her.

Chloe is a captivating thriller about female friendship, the lies we tell ourselves, and the ties that bind us.

Anatomy of a Scandal

At the end of the first episode of Anatomy of a Scandal, Rupert Friend's character James is literally blown backwards by the force of his own shock after he is accused of rape.

While it's a shock to James, it's even more of a shock to his wife Sophie, played by Sienna Miller and her cashmere coats in the series.

Based on Sarah Vaughan's bestselling book of the same name and created by David E. Kelley (Big Little Lies and The Undoing) and Melissa James Gibson (House of Cards), the six-part series is a thrilling tale of consent and deceit, with just a sprinkling of soapy drama.

Cruel Summer

Cruel Summer is a dirty little thriller that will have you hooked from the very first episode.

The series follows 'cool girl' Kate Wallis (Olivia Holt) and nerd Jeanette Turner (Chiara Aurelia) over the summers of 1993, 1994, and 1995. In 1993, Jeanette is admiring Kate's life from afar. By 1994, Kate has disappeared and Jeanette has stepped into her life. And by the summer of 1995, Kate is back, and she has accused Jeanette of being complicit in her disappearance.

Cruel Summer has all the elements of a bloody good teen thriller including a cast of characters who are both really likeable and a little bit duplicitous, a small town setting, plenty of true crime references, and a mystery that keeps you intrigued right up until the final credits.

Cruel Summer is streaming on Prime Video.

Only Murders In The Building

Only Murders In The Building was the most unexpected TV hit of 2021.

The series follows three New Yorkers living in a posh apartment building called the Arconia, who come together to make a podcast when another resident dies under suspicious circumstances.

When Tim Kono, a resident in the building who seems to have rubbed everyone the wrong way, dies in an apparent suicide, Charles-Haden (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) decide there must be more to the story.

So they start their own investigation, and a podcast which they call Only Murders In The Building. And everyone in the building is immediately a suspect including... Sting, who is one of the residents.

It's part murder-mystery, part-comedy, part study of the human condition.

Only Murders In The Building is streaming on Disney Plus.
