There's nothing quite as enticing as an enemies-to-friends-to-lovers storyline, and the Prime Video movie Red, White & Royal Blue takes this classic storytelling device and gives it a groundbreaking (and very sexy) twist.

Based on the best-selling book of the same name, Red, White & Royal Blue tells the story of UK monarch Prince Henry (played by Nicholas Galitzine) and Alex Claremont-Diaz (played by Taylor Zakhar Perez) who is the son of the President of the United States.

The story is set in an alternate reality where in 2016, a Democrat from Texas became the first female President of the United States, Henry and Alex have grown to loathe each other over the years after an ill-fated first meeting. Yet their respective public duties force them to move within the same circles.

Everything from the media constantly comparing them to each other (as they are both young, extremely good-looking, and in close proximity to powerful figures) to a disagreement about who is taller, has kept the fires of dislike burning between Henry and Alex over the years.

However, things come to a disastrous head at a royal wedding when their secret feud becomes public knowledge.

Photos and videos of a fight between the pair immediately start going viral, threatening to damage relations between the United States and Britain at a very critical moment. So Alex is immediately (and begrudgingly) sent back to Britain so he and Henry can partake in some extensive damage control.

But as the two young men start spending more time together, a sizzling romance develops.

One they have to keep secret.

Here's everything you need to know about Red, White & Royal Blue, and why it needs to be at the top of your must-watch list.

Red, White & Royal Blue became a bestseller, but not in the way you'd expect.

Author Casey McQuiston’s debut romance novel Red, White & Royal Blue didn't soar to popularity thanks to a celebrity endorsement or because it was tied to some famous true story.

Instead, readers who discovered the book fell so hard for it that they were the ones to lead the publicity push for the novel in a very organic way. This took place mainly via social channels such as Twitter and TikTok where fans shared their love for Alex and Henry's story, ensuring the book quickly went viral.

The novel landed on the prestigious New York Times Bestseller list in June 2019, while fan art began popping up online, Etsy shops started selling T-shirts that read “Claremont 2020” and “History, huh?” (references from the book).

It takes a special kind of book to infiltrate the online world and group chats the way Red, White & Royal Blue did and the movie promises to be just as crowd-pleasing.

There was an extensive casting process to find the actors who would portray Henry and Alex.

Red, White & Royal Blue marks the feature film writing and directing debut of Tony Award-winning playwright Matthew López, who oversaw an extensive audition process in his quest to find the perfect actors to bring Henry and Alex to life.

“Taylor and Nick have an astonishing chemistry together," he said according to Glamour. "You could see it from their first audition together. They genuinely liked and trusted each other from the start. And individually they each take these characters and make them their own."

Taylor Zakhar Perez first rose to fame while starring in the beloved Young Adult movie series The Kissing Booth, while also appearing in the TV series Minx, and is starring in Prime Video’s original movie 1Up

The supporting cast is packed with familiar faces.

A buzzy book to TV adaptation draws talented and critically acclaimed actors to a project so in addition to Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez the Red, White & Royal Blue cast includes Uma Thurman as President Ellen Claremont, Rachel Hilson as Nora Holleran, Sarah Shahi as Zahra Bankston and Ellie Bamber as Princess Beatrice.

Rounding out the acclaimed cast are Stephen Fry, Clifton Collins Jr, Thomas Flynn, Malcolm Atobrah, Akshay Khanna, Sharon D Clarke, Aneesh Sheth, and Juan Castano.

The movie will bring all of the beloved moments of the book to life, including the famous sex scenes.

The book Red, White & Royal Blue is known, along with its enticing plot, for its very steamy sex scenes and the movie takes this part of the plot to a whole new (and very visual) level.

Once Henry and Alex fall for each other, their sexual chemistry is off the charts, and these intimate and very physical scenes are ones the actors very much lent into.

“There’s so much choreography to sex scenes," Zakhar Perez told GQ. "Our guards were down during the rehearsals."

Galitzine agreed, saying: “It’s crazy to be intimate like that with your friend. And we want people to fall in love with these characters because their love has to be real.”

If you're a die-hard rom-com fan, then you'd know that a movie like this lives and dies on the audiences ability to believe that the couple could really be in love. And after watching the movie, I can assure you that the chemistry and love story between Henry and Alex is right up there with the classic rom-coms we've all fallen in love with.

Red, White & Royal Blue is not just an escapist, sexy rom-com, it's also a groundbreaking movie.

Author Casey McQuiston, who uses gender neutral pronouns, has said they grew up in the golden era of rom-coms and although they loved the genre, they rarely, if ever, saw queer relationships represented.

Red, White & Royal Blue highlights a LGBTQIA+ love story in an honest and nuanced way. Bringing to our screens a relationship that is complex, genuine and above all sexy as hell, the exact love story audiences have been wishing would appear more on our screens.
