Kevin Rudd’s popularity is growing within the party.

The good news is: it’s not a big news day so there’s not all that much you need to get across today. In fact – you may be able to get through this in one minute. Here are the key bits and pieces.

1. There’s speculation Kevin Rudd could challenge the Labor leadership within the next three weeks. Fairfax newspapers suggest Labor MPs believe the showdown between Rudd and Prime Minister Julia Gillard is “inevitable”. It’s been almost a year since the last leadership challenge.

2. A man who mounted a curb and struck a woman and her baby daughter has avoided jail and instead been issued 50 hours of community service. Emma De Silva spent two months in hospital following the incident and still needs daily rehabilitation sessions. Of the decision, Emma’s father Keith said: “I think it’s disgraceful. Our lives are completely shattered and what he has got is probably less than you would normally get for being caught speeding.”

3. The Australian drama series Neighbours is getting a reinvented theme song. Channel 10 and Fremantle Media are reportedly looking for a singer to re-record the iconic tune. A short list of 5 singers will be announced in March.

4. South African police have reportedly found banned steroids in the home of Olympic sprinter Oscar Pistorius. Pistorius has been charged with the murder of Reeva Steenkamp, a South African model who had been dating Pistorius for the past two months.

5. According to documents from The Department of Immigration, children as young as nine are self harming while in detention. The documents revealed 26 children harmed themselves through methods such as taking painkillers and cutting themselves between August 2010 and November 2011.

19-month-old Jonah was hit by a fellow passenger on a plane.

6. A 60-year-old man travelling on a plane in the US reportedly smacked a stranger’s 19-month-old baby because he was crying. The boy’s mother, Jessica Bennett, said her son Jonah cried because he felt pressure in his ears.  She said the man told her to “shut that n-word baby up” before hitting him. He’s since been charged with assault and he’s lost his job as a company director.

7. A Sydney school bus driver has been caught driving at three times the legal blood alcohol level. The driver was on his way to pick up school children yesterday morning when he was involved in an incident. He blew .103.

8. Libyans are celebrating the two year anniversary of the revolt against the country’s former dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Gaddafi was killed in October 2011.
