Statement hoops and 4 other jewellery pieces you need, according to a fashion writer.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: accessories are often more important than clothes. Think about it.

If someone wears jeans and a plain white tee, but pairs them with fabulous earrings, bracelets and a necklace, it's those that make the outfit. And, that's what your eyes are drawn to.

For the past few years, I've been building up my jewellery collection – adding key pieces to build up arm stacks, ear candy and chain layers.

And while I'm slowly building up my collection, I just can't overlook Mejuri, the quiet luxury jewellery brand who makes pieces which are perfect for everyday vibes.

Loved by the likes of Selena Gomez, Hailey Bieber and Margot Robbie, Mejuri’s designs are timeless and handcrafted to be worn forever. With craftsmanship and sustainability at the forefront of all of their brand, they use certified recycled gold and 18k gold vermeil, as well as responsibly sourced diamonds and AAA-grade gemstones to create their jewellery.

If you're looking to build your collection like me, these are the 5 pieces I recommend starting with.

1. Bold hoops.

I'm a low-key hoop hoarder. But that's because they are so important.

Hoops are just fun, no matter the size. A small pair is great for everyday wear, and a bigger pair you'll reach for whenever you go out.

I love Mejuri's Charlotte Bold Hoops ($148), and that's not just because of the name.

They are small and dainty enough to look casual for work or errands, but also have the curved pattern detailing which makes them more exciting than a plain pair of hoops.

These ones are made in gold vermeil – a thick 18k gold layer on sterling silver. I wear these all the time and get plenty of compliments when I do. And style icon Hailey Bieber wore them to Coachella paired with one of her effortlessly styled outfits. These timeless earrings also go well with the Charlotte Bold Ring.

2. Silver earrings.

I strongly believe in mixing metals and have been reaching for silver jewellery just as much as gold lately. A statement pair of silver earrings is a must in your jewellery arsenal.

I can't stop thinking about these Mega Dôme Earrings ($148).

With their signature sculptural design, these bold earrings will elevate any look.

They are made with 925 sterling silver – a lightweight metal made of 92.5 per cent pure silver, which is highly durable and designed for everyday wear.

3. A signet ring.

Signet rings give old money. They give 'my grandmother passed it down to me' and will never go out of style.

The Charlotte Bold Signet Ring ($148) not only matches the hoop earrings I love, but again, has some extra detailing that makes it more exciting than your classic signets.

Like in the photo, my favourite place to wear a signet is on the pinky, and this one is also made from gold vermeil.

4. Something colourful.

Although most people will think that classic jewellery pieces have to be neutral, I strongly believe colour is essential both in your clothes and accessories wardrobe.

With a Single Emerald Cut Gemstone Hoop Charm ($98), you can add colour when you feel like it but remove it when it doesn't quite go with the look.

These charms are made with high quality natural gemstones. This one with green onyx and 14k yellow gold slips onto so many different hoops and comes in four other colours.

5. A diamond ring.

Finally, if you have the means, it's really special to own something with diamonds that you can keep forever.

For your first 'investment piece' I recommend a ring – it's something you wouldn't typically swap out like you might earrings or a necklace.

The Pavé Diamond Soft Charlotte Ring ($2,700) is handcrafted in 14k solid yellow gold and features as many as 72 diamonds (GH colour, SI-2 clarity) in alternating cushions, with an average total carat weight of 0.55 - 0.70ct.

She's gorgeous. And in the spirit of girl math, if you think about the cost per wear and keep it on every single day, it's an investment too!

Mejuri is the category-defining fine jewelry brand that believes jewelry should be an expression of self, and how you show up in the world should have no limits. The pieces are made to live in, designed in-house with craftsmanship and responsible sourcing at the cornerstone of it all. Feeling disconnected from the narrative that fine jewelry is an occasional purchase typically marketed to men, Co-founder and CEO Noura Sakkijha leveraged her learnings as a third-generation jeweler to launch the brand in 2015: resulting in redefining the way women think of and purchase fine jewelry—for themselves.
