Relationships made Margot Robbie 'want to vomit'. Then she fell for her roommate.

She’s been happily married for the past seven years, but when she was Hollywood’s newest golden girl back in 2013, the last thing on Margot Robbie’s mind was finding The One.

“I was the ultimate single gal. The idea of relationships made me want to vomit. And then this crept up on me,” Robbie, 32, told US Vogue in 2016.

‘This’ was Tom Ackerley, a handsome British assistant director she met on the set of the World War II drama Suite Francaise

Unlike so many others in Hollywood, the pair didn’t succumb to the temptation of an on-set fling – instead, they remained just good friends, even moving into a share house in South London in 2014 with five other mates.

“We were like, ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if we all lived together?’” the Australian actress told The Guardian in 2018. “Three days later we signed a lease in Clapham.

"I didn’t even see the place – I had to fly out to the Golden Globes three hours after we made the decision.”

The couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in the Byron Bay hinterland in 2016, and since then, they’ve had one of the most low-key, yet seemingly solid, marriages in showbiz.

And it seems their firm friendship was the foundation for their lasting relationship, with Robbie admitting it was a slow road from platonic to romantic – even though she always secretly harboured feelings for him.

“We were friends for so long. I was always in love with him, but I thought, ‘Oh, he would never love me back. Don’t make it weird, Margot’,” she told Vogue. “And then it happened, and I was like, ‘Of course, we’re together. This makes so much sense, the way nothing has ever made sense before.’”

Even then, it still took some convincing for Robbie to accept the relationship, admitting that they kept it a secret for a time because “we weren’t really taking it seriously”.

She told The Guardian, “Then everyone found out … Everyone was like, ‘No! This is going to ruin our group!’ And then it didn’t. It was fine.”

Against the odds, Robbie and Ackerley have also successfully managed to mix business with pleasure, co-founding their LuckyChap Entertainment production company with two fellow friends.

Though Ackerley tends to leave the spotlight to his wife when it comes to red carpet events, behind the scenes, they’ve worked on big films like I, Tonya, Dreamland, Promising Young Woman and the latest Barbie movie together.

“I’ve been told by many people in showbiz that it’s a really bad idea to work with loved ones or close friends but I don’t see it that way at all,” Robbie has said.

“I think it’s a huge advantage for me to be able to work with Tom. We know each other so well and we enjoy being able to develop and work on projects together.”
