Katy Perry tried to vote in the nude. It didn't end well.

If the terrifying thought of Donald Trump becoming the most powerful man in the world isn’t enough to encourage Americans to vote, then perhaps Katy Perry’s naked body is.

The pop superstar made a promise to vote naked and kept it, stripping off in a hilarious video designed to get young people to the polls in the upcoming general election in the US.

In the clip, which is produced by comedy website Funny or Die, the 31-year-old assures reluctant voters that they can feel free to “look like shit” on voting day.

“I’ve briefly scanned the constitution, and nowhere does it say you just can’t fall out of bed and come to the polls in whatever state you woke up in,” Perry said.

“In the name of democracy, any just-out-of-bed look is A-OK.”

That includes a child’s onesie, kid’s briefs, that freebie XL T-shirt you got from your bank and even slime.

Or in Perry’s case, nothing at all.

Which it turns out is, in fact, not in the constitution at all.

And before you cry "censorship!", no, we haven't added those pesky black bars - they're in the original video, and they've got the internet fuming.

But as one eagle-eyed Twitter user pointed out, if you look closely you'll realise there's actually nothing there to censor.

The California Girl has been actively campaigning for Hillary Clinton all year, and even lent the presidential hopeful her powerful pipes at the Democratic National Convention, where she performed a number of her hit songs.

"You'll be just as powerful as any NRA lobbyist," Perry said onstage.

"At the very least you can just cancel out your weird cousin's vote."
