Julie Andrews to direct 'My Fair Lady' in Sydney.

 

The city’s alive with the sound of Julie.

Well, not literally. But Sydney will be next year when the original Eliza Doolittle, Julie Andrews, heads to Australia‘s largest city to direct the 60th anniversary production of My Fair Lady.

The production will take place at the Sydney Opera House in August 2016. The actress, who starred in George Bernard Shaw's original Broadway show in 1956, will be casting in Sydney later this year.

"I am thrilled to have been asked to direct My Fair Lady at the Sydney Opera House in August 2016," Andrews said in a statement.

"I look forward to coming to Sydney this November to cast the production and begin the process of bringing this great musical to life once again."

My Fair Lady was Andrew's second Broadway show and it was the songs 'Wouldn't It Be Loverly' and 'I Could Have Danced All Night', that helped launched the acclaimed performer's career.

Expected to bring in nearly 20,000 visitors to Sydney and over $7 million to NSW tourism industry, My Fair Lady tells the story of lower-class, Eliza Doolittle who, with the help of her linguistics professor, Henry Higgins, is transformed into an upper class lady.

The film adaptation in 1964 featured Audrey Hepburn as the lead role.

Producer, John Frost said, "To think that Broadway's original Eliza Doolittle, Julie Andrews, will direct our new production at the Sydney Opera House 60 years later will, I'm sure, excite both Australian and international audiences."
