How to turn photos of your kid into modern art.

A new start-up has launched with unique way to turn your child into modern art – with an emphasis on colour and handmade textures.

Printtt was inspired due to the generic, bland and uninteresting art options available to someone wanting personalised art,” says co-founder Michael Mailman.

The business was set up by brother and sister team, Kate and Michael Mailman, after the pair couldn’t find the kind of personalised art they wanted to buy for their niece’s birthday.

Michael designed some background images inspired by the likes of Rothko, Dali, Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat and then they put their niece in the mix.

The result worked a treat as a birthday gift, wowed guests at the party and orders for more prints started right there and then.

“One of the mum asked - ‘where did you get that’ - and wanted one for her daughter,” said Kate.

“So we did one for her and then her friend wanted one and we thought maybe there is a hole in the market so we started up a store online and to give it a go.”

The company aims to “bring some well needed creativity, imagination and design into the personalized art space”.

“We create personalised artwork of your mini human to make your wall pop,” says Kate.

It’s a simple idea with excellent execution.  You upload a photo of your little one and within a five-day turnaround they have customised it with a background and colour palette of your choice.

The pair use quality paper and ink with acid-free, museum grade premium papers and archival inks so the print lasts.

The focus has so far been on kids – including sibling prints - but Printtt have a dog template too.

“I’ve got heaps of friends that don’t have kids, so we’ve started doing pets too,” says Kate.

“We did an Australian sheepdog the other day. Because pets are some people’s kids.”

Michael, 46, and Kate, 38, still have full-time day jobs but are hoping their start-up will take off.

"We obviously have global aspirations. I would love to quit my job," says Kate.
