The beautiful story of a bride who hitchhiked to her own wedding.

While it’s hardly out of the ordinary for a bride to arrive late to their wedding ceremony, a flat tyre is rarely the reason behind the delay.

But for New Hampshire bride Angelique Arsenault it was just that which lead to her hitching up her wedding dress and sticking out a thumb on the side of the road in a bid to make it to the church on time.

“It didn’t even seem real at the time, but it happened,” Arsenault told WBZ-TV.

The car's tyre punctured just five minutes after leaving Arsenault's house in Brookline (that's Brookline, New Hampshire not Brooklyn, New York). In addition to the bride the car was also carrying all the bridesmaids and the bride's immediate family.

"The limo driver gets out of the car, I’m like, ‘it’s fine. Maybe he just hit something,’” maid of honour Katie Queen added. “He gets back in, opens up the back window, and says, ‘you’ve a flat tyre.’”

Realising time was of the essence, Arnault did some quick thinking and decided hitchhiking was the best way for her to make the wedding.

But according to the bride, it wasn't as simple a solution as she'd hoped.

“We actually had cars driving by us and they just took pictures and left and then finally someone actually stopped to see if we needed a ride,” Arnault said.

Thankfully, a driver named Jay came to Arnault's rescue, dropping his children at home before returning to the roadside limousine.

"Where to?" Arnault says Jay asked her when she entered the car.

Thanks to Jay - who refused to be interviewed - Arnault, her family and bridal party made it to the ceremony just 30 minutes late, where her partner of 11 years waiting anxiously at the alter.

“We just laughed about it,” Arnault said of her unusual wedding day.

“It pretty much made the whole day. Everyone was laughing all night about it. It’s going to be a story we’ll remember forever.”

Arnault and her husband are now enjoying their honeymoon and presumably avoiding limousines at all costs.
