'I’m a lifestyle writer. Here are my 5 tips for creating a wardrobe you actually love on a budget.'

There are two things I always look for when shopping: pieces I'll get a lot of wear out of and affordability.

Despite being a fashion lover, I enjoy having money in my bank account (!) so if I can find a bargain or a way to not see my money disappear all at once, I'm all over it.

Since becoming a lifestyle writer I've learned valuable tips from all types of fashion experts - editors, influencers and stylists – on how to create the dream line-up of clothes you won't get tired of, that also won't cost you your monthly paycheck.

Ahead of your next shopping trip or late online browse, here are five things you should know for create a wardrobe you actually love on a budget.

1. What a capsule wardrobe is and what you need in one.

Capsule wardrobe. It's a term you've probably come across when scrolling through social media or flicking through a glossy mag (back when we used to do that).

Fashion editors have been yammering on about them for decades, and for good reason.

A capsule wardrobe basically involves a bunch of staple items you can mix and match, making choosing an outfit easy, with no need to go out and buy new things constantly.

Here's what you need for one:

1. A basic shirt. If you're looking for something casual, go for 100 per cent cotton. But if you're looking for something a little more dressy, look for a linen-blend.

2. A basic tank in a neutral colour – think black, white or grey marle.

3. A good pair of jeans – and they don't need to be expensive (I'm eyeing off Khloé Kardashian's Good American denim range on OZSALE). Whether that's a straight leg, flared or skinny, take your pick.

4. A good coat that suits your height and shape, again black or neutral is best.

5. A blazer, because they always work. A classic tailored black blazer is an ideal option to wear to the office – while an oversized, boxy blazer is a little more cool and casual, and would suit anything from running errands to evening drinks.

6. A dress that you feel comfortable in. It might be black (hello, this Reiss collection), but it also might have a bright and printed because a little bit of colour is always fun.

2. The 80/20 rule.

A fashion stylist taught me this rule, and it's stuck with me ever since.

When building your dream wardrobe, make sure 80 per cent of the pieces are timeless and 20 per cent are trendy.

Therefore, you'll always have basics to rely on but you can add in a trendy piece.

And when looking for those timeless pieces, consider waiting for the sales or using an app that allows you to pay over time with zero interest.

Which leads to my next piece of advice...

3. Check for sales and deals before purchasing investment pieces.

Have you ever used Klarna? It'll changed the way you shop.

When looking for investment pieces, I always use Klarna – an all-in-one shopping app that allows you to pay in four instalments, so you get more tie to pay for the items you love.

The app also shares exclusive deals and drops from brands all over the world daily, so you're across the best sales 24/7.

The app works with hundreds of retailers, including OZSALE – a key fashion marketplace that offers a range of quality fashion brands at always discounted prices.

4. Shoes are so important.

Shoes can make your basics look exciting, never forget that. And there are a few I recommend getting your hands on.

1. White sneakers – either classic white canvas or leather because they're staples for almost all occasions.

2. Nude sandals – you'll be grateful you own them. They'll work for the beach, drinks and everything in-between.

3. Comfortable heels. For when you're going somewhere a little more dressy – I recommend mules or platforms, both super comfortable.

5. As are accessories.

Accessories don't stop at shoes – jewellery, handbags and sunglasses are just as important.

You can change up an entire outfit just from the accessories you choose to wear with it.

Over the past year, I've grown my sunglasses and jewellery collection exponentially, because they make a look.

For jewellery go for staples and a few fun pieces – start with basic gold or silver necklaces, hoops and bracelets and build it out with colour.

Same for sunglasses and handbags, think about pieces that will go with everything (look for your blacks and neutrals), then get creative!

Colour makes things fun, and it doesn't have to be expensive.

There you have it: go build a wardrobe you love.
