Accessories make clothes into an *outfit*. Here are 5 key pieces to shop.

STOP.

I see you, credit card in hand about to hit purchase on the 12th dress you've told yourself you "need" this month.

Hey, I'm not here to shame you. Instead, I'd like to guide you, so when I say ditch the dress and instead, invest in accessories that are going to last a lifetime, then know that I'm only looking out for you (and your bank balance).

Watch: Mamamia Reviews Non Family Friendly Fashion. Post continues below.

You see, accessories aren't something that are going to die out after a few months and they're always going to fit.

Some may even go on to become family heirlooms because, unlike clothes, accessories are built to last.

Without the right pieces, that expensive dress you bought over the weekend is just... a dress. But when it's styled with the right accessories, then it becomes an *outfit*.

You can also afford to have a lot more fun with accessories because the word "timeless" doesn't always mean boring and beige.

So, if you're searching for long-lasting accessories that also look unique, then here are some of my favourites.

about to hit purchase on the 12th dress you've told yourself you "need" this month
I know I'm just a naive, middle aged, straight man, but surely that's a figure of speech? Surely no (regular) person has actually bought twelve dresses in a month?

And continuing in my middle aged, straight male naivety, is a handbag actually considered an accessory? I thought for most women they were a necessity. And I've never even heard of a phone pouch.

@simple simon dresses - it depends, some people are shopaholics, but I'd say that's a little bit of hyperbole! (Although after watching some decluttering videos on YouTube, I'm frequently astonished at just how many clothes some people have.) The handbags - they're a bit of both. I'd say they're an accessory that also serves a practical purpose. If you have to carry a bag (because women's clothing suffers from a notorious lack of pockets!),  you might as well have a pretty one that fancies up your outfit a bit! And for more dressy occasions - weddings etc, a pretty bag like the floral one pictured can compliment your dress, work as almost a piece of jewellery on it's own, and fit your phone and lipstick inside it. If you're really curious, Trinny Woodall has a series on YouTube called Closet Confessions, where she shows how she styles her outfits with all the accessories you can imagine, and explains why they work.

@simple simon
For some it is a necessity, others not. Just like the man bag.
Just bc something is necessary, does not mean ot isn’t an accessory.
A bag can be useful aNd beautiful, it can hold everything  but still complement the outfit.
My daughters nappy bag was purchased bc it complimented the pram.

@nel228 Just bc something is necessary, does not mean [i]t isn’t an accessory
I would've thought they were two separate things. I think you mean: just because something is necessary, does not mean it can't also look nice.
