The festive season may be over, with the tinsel taken down and the firework dust finally settling. But as the New Year rages on, we've been met by my personal favourite season: Awards.

Yes, every year the Golden Globe Awards sneak up on unsuspecting folks still living in holiday mode. But not the good people of Hollywood. They're primped and primed and pushed out onto the red carpet for our entertainment. Don't you love to see it?

The Golden Globe Awards will kick off Awards Season on January 5, 2025 (that's January 6 here in Australia).

The 2025 Golden Globes nominees.

Every year we're excited to see who will be up for a Golden Globe Award and who has been snubbed by the HFPA voters.

This year, French musical crime comedy Emilia Pérez is leading the way, receiving a stunning 10 nominations.

Until now, the film had been snubbed by the New York Film Critics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, as well as the Gotham Awards, but the Globes is putting it back on the agenda.

10 nominations surpasses both Cabaret and Barbie's nine nominations, creating a new all-time record for the musical/comedy category.

The film sees actress Karla Sofía Gascón become the first out trans performer ever nominated for an acting award in the film category, and Zoe Saldaña nab her very first Golden Globe nomination ever.

Both Kate Winslet and Pamela Anderson have been on whirlwind press tours for their films Lee and The Last Showgirl, respectively, and both were nominated for best actress. Homegrown talent Nicole Kidman also got a nod for her film, Babygirl .

Of course, both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were nominated for their roles in Wicked, for best actress and best supporting actress.

The Globes voters also paid attention to The Substance, nominating Demi Moore for best lead actress as predicted. However they also gave a nod to Margaret Qualley for her role as supporting actress — a very wholesome thing to see both women nominated.

Indie darling Anora received five nominations, including one for rising actress Mikey Madison who is amongst the favourites to win.

Timothée Chalamet's upcoming Bob Dylan film A Complete Unknown also saw him nominated, as well as the film itself for best picture, while supporting actor Edward Norton also received a nomination.

Sebastian Stan was actually nominated in acting categories twice: once for his role as Donald Trump in The Apprentice and once for his role as Edward in A Different Man.

"It's certainly surreal," he told Vanity Fair, adding he's "still sort of shaking from it."

He's not the only star to score double nominations.

Selena Gomez was nominated for her supporting role in Emilia Perez and best actress in Only Murders in the Building.

Kate Winslet was also nominated for two, once for playing war photographer Lee Miller in Lee, and one for portraying a fictional dictator in her TV show The Regime

This year, one third of the directing nominees are women, a huge feat considering that this category is historically very male-dominated. Two women are up for best director: Payal Kapadia for All We Imagine as Light and Coralie Fargeat for The Substance.

Other directors were snubbed for these coveted spots, including Ridley Scott for Gladiator II, Denis Villeneuve for Dune: Part Two, Jon M. Chu for Wicked, and RaMell Ross for Nickel Boys.

Over on the silver screen, shows including The Bear, Baby Reindeer and Shōgun scored big nominations.

Shōgun is nominated for best drama, and Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Tadanobu Asano all earned acting nominations. The Bear also scored five, nominated for best comedy, and seeing nominations for Jeremy Allen-White, Ayo Edebiri, Liza Colón-Zaya and Ebon Moss Bachrach.

While Baby Reindeer is up for best limited series, with stars Richard Gadd and Jessica Gunning each earning acting nominations.

Everyone's favourite rom-com series Nobody Wants This also scored three nominations, for best comedy and acting nods for Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. Likewise, Hacks scored nominations for best comedy and acting nods for Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder.

The 2025 Golden Globes snubs.

That brings us to the snubs.

Perhaps the biggest one is a blue-eyed hunky Irishman, who is beloved by (almost) all. Paul Mescal, who spent hours-upon-hours in the baking hot sun for Gladiator II, did not get a nomination for best actor. Arguably the biggest snub of the season, we'd go so far to say.

But he wasn't the only Irish actor snubbed.

We also saw Saoirse Ronan miss out for Outrun, where she plays a young alcoholic who leaves rehab and begins a journey to get back on her feet. Given she won the Telluride Film Festival Silver Medallion and was nominated for a British Film Independent Award and Gotham Award for the role, it's come as quite the shock.

Of course, of all the films given the flick by Globes voters, Dune: Part Two had the most 'interesting' time.

It landed a best-drama nomination and a nomination for Hans Zimmer's score, but no nomination for cinematic and box office achievement or its director, Denis Villeneuve.

Then, on the streaming side of things, hit series Fallout was snubbed at the globes despite raking in a whopping 16 Emmy nominations.

American drama film Sing Sing did well at the Gotham Awards but was not favoured as much by Globes voters. Thankfully, Colman Domingo did get a nod for best actor.
