Scrunchies and spray: I got bouncy, wavy hair without using a single hot styling tool.

I’ve just discovered the easiest way to get bouncy, wavy hair with zero effort. No hot tools necessary.

The answer is not sorcery. Nor will it cost you a trillion dollars.

It’s called the Playa New Day Mist and it’ll set you back $37.

Over the weekend, I used this humble hair product and two scrunchies to create Victoria’s Secret-style waves while I slept. In total, it took me five minutes and I didn’t have to switch on a single powerpoint.

Here’s how I did it.

Before we get into it, here’s five easy hacks for better hair. Post continues after video.

What is the Playa New Day Mist?

In short: it’s a multi-tasking mist that can get you an extra day out of tired, crinkly, greasy hair.

One part hairspray, one part hydrator and one part fragrance, a generous spritz of this spray is like hitting the reset button on your hair, without having to wash it or chuck in a tonne of dry shampoo.

Playa (which is Spanish for ‘beach’) is an LA brand stocked at Mecca who are all about a minimalist, less is more approach to hair. Their shampoos, conditioners, sprays and oils are made from naturally-derived ingredients and designed to give your hair a tousled, low-maintenance look.

Considering we’re all busy, busy, busy and want better results for less effort, I’m into it.

How to use the Playa New Day Mist.

Playa reckons you can use their New Day Mist as a wrinkle-eraser on dry hair to reset hair dented from snoozing, or on dry hair before blow drying for natural-looking volume.

But my favourite of the many ways you can use Playa New Day Mist is to create loose, undone waves while you sleep.

Without a single hot tool, tong or curler.

I know this because I tried it and was wowed by the results.

Here’s my before and after transformation using the Playa New Day Mist. Magic, yeah?

To create wavy hair minus the curling wand:

  1. Separate and twist dry hair into one Princess Leia bun if you have short hair or two buns for long hair.
  2. Secure buns with spiral kink-free hair ties or silk scrunchies - avoid regular hair ties as they will leave dents in your ends.
  3. Snooze.
  4. Wake up.
  5. Gently take the buns out and generously spritz your hair with New Day Mist.
  6. Tip your head upside down and use your fingers to brush through the waves, and use your hands to hold the shape of the waves as the spray sets.
  7. If your hair is a touch greasy, spray some dry shampoo into the roots and massage in using your fingers.
  8. Go forth and live your life.

Now for the important question... how did the waves hold throughout the day?

Naturally, not as well as if I'd used a curling wand and a hazardous amount of hairspray.

BUT my loose curls and I left the house at around 7:30am and by 5pm, my hair still had a slight, albeit deflated, wave. Which is pretty good for hair that was on its last legs anyway.

Verdict: At $37 bucks, Playa New Day Mist isn't the cheapest hair product on the shelf.

What it is, though, is a godsend for anyone who wants to:

  • Wear their hair wavy without using heat styling.
  • Save time in the morning.
  • Wash their hair less often without looking and feeling like a greasy gremlin.
  • Get an extra day out of their blow dry.
  • Wear effortless, cool girl hair.

I'll take all of the above, thanks.
