Do You Like This Story?

By BEC SPARROW

It’s been magic, hasn’t it?

TV this year.  It’s like we rediscovered our ability to make fabulous drama, to tell our own stories. And baby, when we tell Australian stories we nail it.  (As compared to when we try to rip off American reality TV concepts  — Being Lara Bingle, The Shire, anyone? –  in which case we implode like Bob Katter’s head during Mardi Gras.

Channel 10 made some truly bizarre programming decisions (choosing a controversial Kiwi to host Breakfast, axing The Circle and anyone else remember the blink-and-you-miss-it Everybody Dance Now?  I’m still not sure why that show didn’t work but it didn’t.).

On the positive, they have The Project which (for me) is the perfect mix of news, chat and Dr Chris Brown.  Channel 7 coasted along not taking any big risks but continuing to deliver likeable content like Downton Abbey and My Kitchen Rules and the type of  content that makes you want to stick a fork in your eye …  like Beauty and the Geek).

And Channel Nine finally got back in the game.  It’s like they went into Cash Converters, bought some old, tired shows and revamped them (The Voice is the new Australian Idol, Big Brother is back and all of a sudden they’re snapping up Australia’s Got Talent). Finally, the ABC showed everyone else how to program decent shows with In Gordon Street Tonight, MABO, The Gruen Transfer, Rake, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries and Q & A. I don’t think I watched SBS at all except for Insight. But Insight is THE BOMB. So there.

But enough of all that.  What were the real highlights of 2012? Here’s my pick …

Screen Shot 2012 12 24 at 12.10.34 PM 380x409 What we watched ... the best TV of 2012.

The Voice judges

1. THE VOICE – Channel 9

Oh my God, how good was it? Seriously.  They took the tired, seen-it-all-before Australian Idol format and tipped it on it’s head.  There were no humiliating you-cannot-sing-you-complete-arsehat auditions.  No embarrassing tear-you-a-new-one critiques from the judges. Instead we had vocal “couches”, enthusiasm and fluro nail polish..  I’m not sure what i enjoyed more,  seeing Keith Urban’s undies,  watching Seal dance in a way that can only be described as ‘sexual hot chocolate’ or wondering if Joel Madden was turning up occasionally stoned.  I loved every minute and while I’m sad that Keith has jumped ship to that bucketload of crazy known as American Idol .. I’ll be tuning in next year (if only to read Em Rusciano’s hilarious Mamamia re-caps ..).

2. OFFSPRING – Channel 10

Okay, I’m about to recap season three, so AVERT YOUR EYES IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN IT YET!  Seriously, this Aussie drama wipes the floor with everything else.  The writing is fabulous, the original music is divine (Eddie Perfect and Clare Bowditch were extraordinary this year) and the acting is impeccable.  Just when you think they’ve run out of crazy arse storylines we watch our favourite verbal serial-killer Billie and her husband Mitch struggle with their infertility with Mick becoming increasingly close to Rosanna.

Screen Shot 2012 12 24 at 12.12.38 PM What we watched ... the best TV of 2012.

Nina and Patrick.

The deliciously goofy little brother Jimmy became a father (but more importantly delivered the line “Nanna Nina Noonan” and introduced me to the concept of ‘surprise chips’) and  Nina delivered an unforgettable scene when – off her face drunk – she attempted to hide in a tree in her front yard. And look Kick Gurry, we like you but rack off.  You do not get to be Nina’s love interest.  And finally, Nina  and Patrick sorted their shit out at the eleventh hour and found out they were pregnant. That scene with them running down the hospital hallways holding hands … magic. OH MY GOD I CANNOT WAIT FOR NEXT SEASON! Bring. It.

3. CAN OF WORMS – Channel 10

Channel 10, you are both morons and geniuses.  You let the magic that is Chrissie Swan walk away from The Circle but were smart enough to give this 38 year old former advertising copywriter, her own show.  The format of  Can of Worms was always good but never really hit its stride with Dicko as the host. Now with the fabulous Chrissie Swan steering the ship, it’s an hour of TV full of cheeky laughs, refreshingly honest celebrity opinions (imagine that!  REAL OPINONS! WOO!)  on a range of meaty issues and, of course,  terrific debate. Frankly, it’s great TV and the only thing missing is Meshel Laurie who featured in the first season … which brings me to my next highlight …

244 What we watched ... the best TV of 2012.

Karl and Lisa.

4. THE TODAY SHOW – Channel 9

I tend to flick between Sunrise and TODAY but I have to say, the Today Show win HUGE points for having the courage to allow two women to host the show on a regular basis. When Senor Karl is away, it’s not uncommon to see Georgie and Lisa co-hosting … why is having two women host a TV program so ‘daring’?  It’s 2012, people.

5. REVENGE – Channel 7

Okay, the truth is I never actually watched this. And from the ads it really looked like it was about a chick with the looks of a supermodel and the people skills of Charles Manson.  It’s been a while since TV had a decent over-the-top soap opera and this one (according to the ratings) fit the bill.  My friend Rob summed up Revenge this way:  “Crazy, exceptionally attractive, incredibly wealthy, martial arts superstar chick seeks revenge for the death of her father who is the victim of a terrorist conspiracy involving the Greyson empire. Typical love triangle thing going on, along with plenty of glitz and glamour. Its like the OC loaded up on on crack with Terintino pulling all of the strings….. but in a Hollywood kind of way.”  What’s not to love?

Screen Shot 2012 12 24 at 12.18.35 PM 380x348 What we watched ... the best TV of 2012.

Were you watching Homeland?

6. DOWNTON ABBEY – Channel 7

The moment Lady Sarah shagged that dude and he died, I was hooked to this series.  Love a bit of pearl-clutching, slutty costume drama. Plus it has Dame Maggie Smith. GOLD.

7. HOMELAND – Channel 10

Claire Danes is PHENOMENAL as the CIA operative (Carrie Anderson) who struggles to live with her bi-polar disorder. To see a character on TV who is living with a mental illness is refreshing. And Danes is extraordinary in this role as a woman who at times, feels she is losing her mind. Damn you, Brodie.

8. THE OLYMPICS – Foxtel/ Channel 9

Best. Opening. Ceremony. EVERRRRRRRRRRRR.  (Daniel Craig as James Bond accompanying the Queen, the homage to Shakespeare and Harry Potter, the appearance of Mr Bean and the London Symphony Orchestra doing Chariots of Fire and David Beckhman on a speedboat …). Oh yeah, and the sport was okay too.

puberty blues tv show What we watched ... the best TV of 2012.

Best show of 2012?

9. PUBERTY BLUES (10) / HOWZAT! – KERRY PACKER’S WAR (9)/ REDFERN NOW (ABC)

What did 2012 prove? That when it comes to telling our own stories, we are phenomenal.  Each of these series was take-your-breath outstanding.  But for me, nothing beats watching the celebration of friendship between Debbie and Sue (Ashleigh Cummings and Brenna Harding) … the actresses so beautifully captured the drunk-on-love quality of teenage girls who are BFFs. And when they rescued Freda from being gang-banged in a panel van, I wanted to both cry and cheer. Now rack off.

10. JIMMY GIGGLE – ABC4KIDS

I’d like to personally thank Jimmy Giggle for babysitting my four-year-old so often during the year.  Lovin’ the sideburns, man. Don’t ever change.

My husband Brad is of course horrified by this list and feels that The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones should be mentioned. But whatever.

Check out some of this years best (and worst) TV shows below:

Dexter Season 7

Over to you.  What show was your highlight for 2012? What are you looking forward to watching next year?

We loved “The Voice” and “Homeland” but out of professional interest and (mostly) sheer enjoyment we’ve watched a lot of “series TV”.
Often, those TV series serve up much higher quality than the movies.

Our favourites list includes – Downton Abbey, Breaking Bad, Boardwalk Empire, Dr Who, Episodes, Misfits, The Newsroom, Game of Thrones, Grandma’s House, Outnumbered, Being Human (UK version), Moonie Boy, The IT Crowd, plus numerous cooking and comedy shows on cable.

The River Cottage series has always been our “de-stress” program and we’ve loved Masterchef on 10 – we’re looking forward to seeing Marco Pierre-White’s Masterchef-The Professionals – he’s terrific and doesn’t take himself THAT seriously.

At the moment we’re enjoying “The Hour” set at the BBC in the 50′s – so far it’s examining journalistic integrity AND the world of spying at such a turbulent time in history – brilliant performances.

The most vital part of Australian drama will always be the scripts and we should be treating our scriptwriters with far more respect and financial reward otherwise we’ll lose them to Britain and the US.

I don’t know anyone who watches morning shows such as Today and Sunrise. On the rare occasion that I have flicked between the two, I have been left feeling unimpressed and unentertained … Just fluff TV.

Jimmy Giggle and Hoot are just perfect – ABC4Kids has really managed to pull off kids tv and keep it fresh, wholesome and funny. Between them they manage to pull off a muppets vibe – I love it!

Definitely loved The Voice and how the judges got along so well without the catty comments as seen on the American version. And Homeland, the finale had me on the edge of my seat! And can’t wait for season 2 of Revenge……

    My favourites for 2012:

    1. Justified. Based on Elmore Leonard stories, incredibly well-written, and you can’t help but fall a little bit in love with Timothy oliphant.

    2. Game of thrones (season 2).

    3. Community (season 3).

    4. Survivor. Current season has mostly likeable and interesting contestants.

    5. So You Think You Can Dance (USA). The robot guy on the current season is unspeakably wondrous.

    6. Episodes. Quite enjoyable.

The project and the circle before they axed it.
I actually watched the breakfast show before they axed that as I can’t tolerate Kochie or Karl anymore. Paul Henry could be annoying, but was at least funny.
Call the midwife, ABC and one born every minute on SBS (uk version) and 24 hours in emergency (can’t remember if it’s on ABC or SBS). They satisfy my nursey side of myself.
Loved game of thrones, they did well with the adaptation from the book (although they should’ve stuck colored contacts on Dany and Viserys).
Loved Homeland and enjoyed puberty blues.

This is weird, but I only watched the ads for Offspring. Somewhere along the way I fell in love with Dr Patrick…from the ads, lol. I then actually watched episodes 10-13 and fell in love with the show. Since it ended I have watched every episode ever made and the final episode about ten times…especially the last ten minutes or so. Safe to say, I am truly hooked and can not wait for season four. (Funnily enough I realised that what I thought was happening on each episode was completely different to what was really happening in the show. Ads can be very misleading)

Homeland & Offspring are my picks (Asher Keddie is amazing … but funny how we dont refer to Patricks real -life name – we are all in love with him, we want his character to be real!). The Today Show hands down is the best morning show.

Best – Melbourne’s Carols by Candelight, classy, elegent, and classic. Worst, Sydney’s effort in the Domain – brassy and kitsch. A tale of 2 cities right there really.

I don’t know about that. I find the Melbourne carols to be so stuffy and uptight. Lovely but oh so formal. Carols in the Domain is so much more fun and has more of a sense of joy I feel. Yeah the advertising and cross promotion is annoying but I suppose if it is to remain a free event for all those thousands of people who attend then they have to pay for it somehow.

I almost cried when channel ten axed The Circle. I found it so insulting that the execs replaced a panel of intelligent, funny and entertaining Australian personalities with run of the mill American shows which are completely irrelevant to my life and I have no interest in watching. On the upside I could not miss Homeland, loved it!

Game of Thrones is brilliant once you start really watching it.

    Borgia’s also so well acted.

Boss – Kelsy Grammer at his finest

Australian Grand Design – Peter Maddison, I think better than Kevin.

Offspring – Asher Keddie – OMG my girl crush.

    Homeland – love it

    Also watched Redfern and Howzat.

    Next year looking forward to:

    Chicago Fire

For the next week I am going to be completely off the radar as I rewatch season six of ‘Dexter’ (which I’ll get for Christmas today) and then watch season seven, which a friend kindly downloads from the net for me and burns it onto a disk (and I will then receive the proper dvd pack for Christmas next year, so no actual stealing going on). I just love the show so much! Can’t wait to sink my teeth into season seven, season six ended on the gaspiest, most hair raising cliff hanger I have ever borne witness to. Not looking up what happens in season seven on Wikipedia has tested my willpower more than anything else in this world!

    Merry Christmas, everyone.

Oh, and to those at Mamamia, may I just say that I love this site to pieces, I learn so much, I love reading everyone’s comments, I love putting my own two cents in. Frankly, if I had to pay a monthly fee in order to be able to visit, I would. And gladly. Thank you for all the information, for all the articles that made me think, ‘Huh, never thought about it from that angle,’ and for a couple of posts that have had me in literal tears of laughter at my desk (the one about things you never thought you’d say to your children springs to mind, I had to leave the office to go outside and have hysterics for a bit). Merry Christmas to you all, the gifts you give me are daily, and most appreciated.

I actually think that’s what was missing for me from The Voice. Maybe I’m mean but it was a little too touchy-feely-lovey-dovey for me. I thought there were plenty of times when the contestants deserved criticism and they didn’t get it. I probably won’t bother with The Voice next year.

My favourite shows this year were The Walking Dead, Breaking Bad and Dexter. All three had fantastic seasons!

Agreed. I liked The Voice for the talent, but the judges/mentors were far too cheesy for me. Such a hyped up show. So, over the top American influenced as well. Can’t stand that sort of contrived programming.
