Could you imagine anyone other than Sarah Jessica Parker playing the role of Carrie Bradshaw? I can’t.
In my head, SJP was always meant to be the lead in Sex and the City, writing about her sexcapades (or sometimes, lack thereof) and looking stunning no matter what she pulled out of that enormous damn wardrobe of hers.
Seriously, I challenge you to imagine another actress in that role. Can you picture Katie Holmes wearing that fabulous Vivienne Westwood with a bird on her head? How about Nicole Kidman in the arms of Mr Big or Aiden? And Gwyneth Paltrow could never have pulled off the bag and shoe stealing scene with that same panache.
And Matthew Broderick is not Matthew Broderick. He is Ferris Bueller. You know, the bad boy who skipped school, did the Twist and Shout on national live TV and ‘borrowed’ a ferrari. And he stole our hearts by doing so.
But the actors in these cult classics weren’t necessarily destined to play those roles.
In fact, some of our best loved stars were only made famous by the film and TV roles that they were never supposed to have.
Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump was a second choice. A SECOND CHOICE. CRAZY. (But luckily he was also the right one.)

Desperate Housewives star Dana Delany turned down Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and The City
Which famous actors and actresses would you have preferred to see in iconic roles?

Gillian Anderson would have been fabulous as Lady Cora on Downton Abbey!

Wow! It’s funny how some characters are so defined by the actor/ actress who portrayed them!
As much as I loved Sandra Bullock in the role I can definitely see Julia Roberts as Leigh Ann Tuohy.
Forrest Gump would have been so different with Travolta in it!
loading...
Apparently Cameron Diaz was being considered for the role of Rose DeWitt Bukator in Titanic. I cannot imagine anyone but the lovely Kate Winslet in that role!
loading...
Cannot possibly imagine Pamela as Scully, my mind is blown!

I’ve heard that Richard Harris nearly turned down the role of Dumbledore, but his grandchild threatened never to speak to him again if he did. Thanks, kid.
loading...
Pamela Anderson as Scully … pardon?
And Freddy Prinze Jnr really should have taken that role as Spiderman, where is he now anyway?
And anyone but Julia Roberts playing Vivienne woud have been disasterous.
loading...
I was never a fan of the show but I really can’t imagine Pamela Anderson as Dana Scully in The X-Files.
loading...
Ha ha!! Or any role that would call for her to open her mouth…
loading...
Matthew Borderick in Break Bad? Def can’t see that one!
loading...
Most interesting ‘what if?’ is Gillian Anderson as Cora in Downton Abbey – might have been fascinating.
I thoroughly agree with everyone who said WTF about Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. Unvelievable. Chris Hemsworth would be a better bet, even though he’s a bit on the young side.
loading...
And can you imagine Tom Selleck as Indianna Jones?
loading...
Why is Freddie Prinze Jnr turning down any role!!!
loading...
I agree! He doesn’t seem to have been in anything big in years and yet he turned down Spiderman! Crazy.
loading...
Why is Freddie Prinze Jnr turning down any role!!!

Gallery isn’t working for me either.. I tried refreshing the page but it didn’t help. I use google chrome.
loading...
I was so seriously considering all these roles and the alternative casting options and then I got to Pamela Anderson turning down Dana Scully… and now I can’t stop laughing. hahahahahaha.
loading...
I don’t think its even true. I remember reading years ago that the creator of the X Files had to fight to cast Gillian Anderson because she wasn’t considered sexy enough by the producers and they wanted someone younger and hotter, “like Pamela Anderson” because back in the early 90s when the X files started, she was considered young and hot and at the peak of her Baywatch fame.
Thank god she was busy doing other things!!
loading...
I cant see Dana Delaney as Carrie Bradshaw but I think she would have been a good Scully – although Gillian Anderson was perfect.
loading...
If anyone else played Carrie Bradshaw, Big would have proposed years ago.
By the way, you missed out on SJP turning down the role of Mr Ed…
loading...
Bit catty…
loading...
Dude please.
SJP is awesome, fab, gorgeous and a total icon. Diss her at your peril!!!
loading...
I refused to see “One for the Money” the movie based on the 1st Janet Evanovich book. I thought they all were all badly cast. I think alot of readers agreed, because the movie tanked.
loading...
Lozzie, I watched it on DVD last Friday and it wasn’t too bad, but if they had made it way back when the film rights were purchased, we definitely could have seen a much better cast. I actually like the Morelli in the film (I didn’t think I would) but the Ranger was all wrong. Actually the only two characters I think they got right were Lula and Morelli. Everyone else was way off the mark. I’m hoping if they do get to make a second one, they recast. (If it was THAT bad in the box office maybe they can’t entice the actors back….)
loading...
Thanks for the review Shaezy. But I just dont think I can go there.
I have a mental image of Ranger and I dont want to mess with it.
If they re-cast for a 2nd one, I may re-consider.
I think Sandra Bullock would have been perfect, 10 years ago, when the film rights were purchased.
loading...
Ditto that, Lozzie. My mental picture of Ranger cannot be changed, even though the guy in the movie was a cutie. He just wasn’t tough or enigmatic enough.
Lula was spot on though, exactly how I’d pictured her, as was Connie.
loading...
Reduced poltlines and bad casting…The two reasons I avoid watching any good-book-turned movie. I’m a Morelli girl myself…
loading...
Once I got over the casting, i thought it worked. Reckon you’re right about Ranger tho.
loading...
I think they nailed Lula, Connie and cousin Vinnie – he really did come across as a sleazy rat faced creep. Oh, and Mr Plum. Can’t believe how badly Grandma Mazur was cast, let alone Morelli and Ranger. It’s hard to enjoy a movie when your mind is stuck on ‘but she’s meant to be a skinny little woman, he’s meant to be dark italian not irish…’ and so on.
That said, I have watched it twice…
loading...
I think we need to remember that roles can be turned down due to other filming commitments- not necessarily because the actor didn’t want to do it.
loading...
I would have loved to see the gallery but as usual doesn’t work on iPad. Technology is changing mamamia and if your site doesn’t keep up you will lose your followers.
loading...
It works on mine – I just click the arrows next to the big picture rather than the thumbnails.
loading...
Sorry An, I’ve had a play and it should be working now. Thanks for letting us know.
loading...
Thanks Nat working now.
loading...
Mine still doesn’t work – mac using firefox. It hasn’t worked in aaages and often the pictures continue past the boundary of the border (so you cant click through to see them all). You don’t get the captions that way either, so the whole gallery is useless to me and I don’t even get to know any of the roles/actors
loading...
Seriously, this is the only website where I can’t view slide shows, I got an email about 4 months ago to help me diagnose the problem, but no follow up… Is there some technical issue that is ongoing?
Getting a bit frustrating, I really like this site but it’s getting harder to follow along
loading...
I use my iPhone to view the site, many times there is not even a gallery loaded with the article for mobile users but it’s there for desk top users…sorry MM but its getting very frustrating that it’s not included!
loading...
It should be working now – apologies, princesstan
loading...
Thanks Nat! Much appreciated!!

If you can’t view the gallery on Mamamia, try this website. They have the same gallery of pictures.

The SATC wedding dress was Vivienne Wastward not Vera Wang..
loading...
Or Vivienne Westwood even

The gallery is not working?

Emily Browning is obviously an intelligent girl turning down a role in a rubbish series of movies (based on some trash books).
loading...
But she’s made some pretty unimpressove career choices in favor of the franchise (of which I’m not a fan) that arguably would have given her power and flexibility to choose better roles.
She chose ‘Suckerpunch’ which ranked and was poorly received by critics and ‘Sleeping Beauty’ (I think that’s what it was called?) which also tanked and was poorly received, along with another low budget thriller that was panned and wasn’t even released to cinemas.
I think Kristen Stewart (unimpressove though she was in the role) is in a much better career position post – Twilight than browning is at te moment after her series of flops. Producers are going to be much less inclined to cast her now.
loading...
Apparently Paul Hogan was offered the role in Ghost played by Patrick Swayze. WEIRD
loading...
Couldn’t imagine anyone else in the roles of Carrie Bradshaw or Forrest Gump.
Can imagine some of the others in that gallery, though.
And as much as I loved Matthew Broderick as Ferris Bueller, I could imagine Robert Downey Jr in that role (back in the day).
loading...
Here’s another one: Rob Lowe turned down Dr McDreamy in Grey’s Anatomy.
loading...
ahh am not aware that Julia Roberts featured in Basic Instinct guys.
loading...
These errors seem to be creeping in more and more! There’s a comment below about Carrie’s wedding dress being attributed to the wrong designer, as well.
I know there’s a lot of content going up here often, but I’d like to see accuracy prioritised, please.
loading...
agree!!
loading...
I just watched Gladiator yesterday. It would have been so, so, so different with Mel Gibson instead of Russel. Mind blowing. I’m thinking, not so many Oscars.
loading...
I hate to be the person doing this, but Carrie’s wedding dress was by Vivienne Westwood – a world away from Vera Wang!
Pity Katie Holmes turned down Buffy – might have given her a bit more attitude than being playing sulky Joey Potter! Can’t imagine Buffy/SMG putting up with that Scientology crap …
loading...
I can’t think of anyone is a current show/film, but I am seriously questioning Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher in the forthcoming film. I know he owns the rights and all, but seriously? Reacher has always been described as 6’5″, blonde, blue eyed and built like a brick proverbial. They could dye TC’s hair, give him contacts and platforms, wrap him in a muscle suit and he will NEVER embody the character of Reacher. Never. Ever. (I might be a *little* passionate about that…especially when you own the rights for something and (mis)cast yourself as the lead!)
loading...
Oh, I couldn’t agree more! I was so disappointed when I heard that TC is playing Jack Reacher. I’m thinking more Daniel Craig or Sean Bean for that role.
loading...
I too agree with you both. I will never watch TC as Jack Reacher and it is almost spoiling the new book for me. I keep thinking I will be imagining that little weasel as Reacher.
I couldn’t think of anyone that I pictured as Reacher but I have now come to the conclusion, after watching Friday Night Lights, that Taylor Kitsch is PERFECT even if he is a little young.
loading...
Chris Helmsworth would have been good, height and presence wise at least.
loading...
I second Chris Hemsworth.
loading...
I COULD NOT AGREE MORE!
I’m a massive Jack Reacher fan. I don’t know how many times the author references Reacher’s massive size throughout the series…hundreds probably.
I think Liam Neeson would have been a good fit for the role. He has that serious nature like Reacher.
Other Reacher fans are also outraged by the choice.
Nuff said
loading...
Glad I’m not the only one!!! I just won’t see the film/s. I can’t do it.
loading...
Tom Cruise as Reacher distresses me to the point where I can’t go and see the movie. There are a million people that would have made a better Reacher. Jason Statham, Kevin Durand, Thomas Jane, Mads Mikkelsen, Eric Bana, Hugh Jackman…
My personal favourite to play the ex-military tough guy is Adam Baldwin (from Firefly, Chuck etc). Tall, muscled, brawler, played military types…
loading...
Ohhh Nerrida, I LOVE Adam Baldwin and you are right – he would make an AWESOME Reacher!
loading...
Seriously! How is he supposed to execute the perfect head butt?! Is he going to get them on the chin?! This has pissed me off more than any movie casting ever.
Either Chris Hemsworth, or whoever the dude is who plays Alseed in True Blood (purely because of their size). Hell, even a WWE wrestler would have been better cast in the role than Tom Cruise.
But I’m going to have to watch it. Which pisses me off even more!
loading...
As someone who hates the US Office, Paul Giamatti may have made it a little better…
loading...
The second pic you’ve got for ‘Michelle Pfeiffer turned down the lead in Basic Instict’ is wrong, that’s Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman not Sharon Stone.
loading...
Thanks Anon.
Minor slip up, she turned down the lead in Pretty Woman as well!
loading...
I was nearly Storm Boy, does that count?
loading...
Would have been better if you were nearly Mr Percival!
loading...
Mr Percival died in 2009.
loading...
oh, storm boy that brings back memories!
loading...
John Travolta also turned down the role of Billy Flynn in Chicago…more than once…whoops !!!
loading...
Jack Nicholson turned down Michael?? What the hell!! He would have been legendary in that role. Wonder if he has any regrets? Would have loved to see Sarah Bernhardt as Miranda too.
loading...
I am pretty sure I read an article by Sandra explaining why she turned it down and why she didn’t regret it – does that ring a bell with anyone else?
loading...
Al Pacino WAS legendary as Michael.he played him in a very understated manner and I don’t know if Jack would have done it with the same finesse.
loading...
john travolta as forrest gump! am so glad that did NOT happen…would have preferred freddie as spiderman though
loading...
I bet Freddie wished he signed on for Spiderman. He hasnt had a good role in years – apart from being married to the beautiful Sarah Michelle Gellar.
loading...
I think Freddie is too hot to be nerdy little Peter Parker…
loading...
Pam Anderson turned down the role of Scully? Surely that is a rumour she started herself!
loading...
I couldn’t imagine anyone else as Walter White in Breaking Bad.
Bryan Cranston OWNS that role.
loading...
Walter White is DIABOLICAL!
Love it!
loading...
Jeez, Sharon Stone looks rough in that split shot with Michelle Pfeiffer….
loading...
SO GLAD Harrison Ford was Han Solo! Also the pic you have for Basic Instinct is from Pretty Woman?
loading...
Oh Ian Mckellan would have been the most amazing Dumbledore!
loading...
I think he made the right choice, though. If he was playing Dumbledore, how many people would have just said that he was playing Gandalf at Hogwarts?
loading...
Haha! Yes! Serious identity issues!
loading...
“OMG I brought the wrong wand to work today.”
loading...
Most of these I get but some of them seem very random – Pam Anderson as Dana Scully?! Thomas Jane as Don Draper?!
loading...
Did Pamela Anderson seriously get offered Dana Scully???? Nooooooooooooo!
loading...
I just had to pick myself up off the floor after reading that one. Seriously?? Wow, I loved that show for years. What a joke they would have made of the Scully character by casting someone like that in the role. I’m soooo glad she turned it down and we got such a fantastic person for the role instead. It would have been a completely different character otherwise, and one that it would have been very hard to take seriously!
loading...
As a huge X-Files fan I call false on that one. Both Duchovny and Anderson were unknowns before it came along whilst she was famous from Baywatch by that stage…
loading...
Do you mean it isn’t true? Sorry, I’m not sure I understood your reply?
Yep, it’s that Baywatch connection that does it for me – a bimbo in a suit (I know, I know, she was a serious lifeguard who HAD to ‘bounce’ around the beach as part of her job..!
), or Gillian Anderson who could convincingly play the role of someone who had worked their way up through the FBI, was overly serious/ sceptical about Mulder etc. Anderson wins on all hands for me!
loading...
Sorry my reply really didn’t make sense! Lol at Pammy.
