Mamamia’s Managing Editor Lana writes:
Kim Kardashian arrived in Sydney today and Khaos ensued as it does when the Kardashians, well when the Kardashians blink.
News.com reports:
“Arriving with her entourage – including sister Khloe and her L.A. Lakers basketball star husband Lamar Odom – the newly-single Kim walked through the back of the airport with her head down, hiding her face with sunglasses from more than 100 onlookers.
Police efforts to form a walkway failed, with media swarming around the reality star-turned entrepreneur and her entourage once she emerged, causing pandemonium for everyone hoping to catch a glimpse of her.
Federal officers then resorted to force to remove photographers from the pack, throwing media away from the scrum and some into nearby walls.
Neither Kardashian spoke once during the minute of madness – dodging questions about Kim’s “scam” marriage by keeping their heads down.”
Seriously – what is it with the Kardashian obsession? Journalist and news reporter Alissa Warren describes it best when she writes:
I brought Kim Kardashian home to my house this afternoon. And while I was looking her up and down, I dropped banana bread on her face. There she was … absolutely perfect on the pages of my glossy magazine … bar the oily face and crumbed dress … and all I can think is “how did she get this famous?”
I see a Kardashian every day. Possibly more than I see my husband. I know more about their lives than my own. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not in the ‘For’ camp. But, that said, I’m not in the ‘Against’ camp. I hate camping. I’m in the ‘Denial’ camp. For many months, I have ignored anything and everything to do with “that K-family”. You could call me, too Kool for Kardash.
I had dinner with a few girlfriends a few weeks ago and they squealed with delight, “Guess who my brother saw in LA? Khloe and Mason!” Everyone leaned closer. So did I. All I could think was, “Were they in our year at school? Did Khloe steal my lunch? Did Mason break someone’s heart?”
Don’t really get it either? Don’t really care? Well, neither did I.
But now, I’m listening.
Because I’ve realised to truly understand the gravity of how popular and how huge this family is … you need to talk numbers, not words.
- 70 million. That’s how much this family earnt last year. What do they do? Like, as in how do they earn this money? They do a reality show (which now has about four spin offs) and they cut deals with anyone who’ll pay. Give them cash and they’ll show up at your party/ wedding/ dentist appointment and they’ll bring along whatever clothes/ handbag/ book/ weight loss shake they might be spruiking at the time.
- 40 million. That’s how many hits the most popular family member – Kim – gets on her blog each month.
- 11 million. This is how many followers Kim has on Twitter. Just ahead of her? The President of the United States.
- $25,000. This is apparently the fee Armani paid Kim to give their brand a plug via a tweet.
- 681%. The rise in searches on Yahoo! for ‘Kim Kardashian’ during August. The month she got married.$10 million. How much Kim Kardashian’s wedding cost.
- $0. How much Kim Kardashian and her family spent on her wedding.
And so, on flicking through this week’s Woman’s Day (including crumbs from the banana bread), I didn’t find it surprising to see that Kim is charging $1 million to flog her handbags at DJ’s in Sydney and show her perfectly groomed face at some flashy race carnival in Melbourne.
But no matter how many pictures I flick through or how many articles I read, I feel about as much warmth for this family as I do for a bag of onions.
There’s no food for thought (unless they’re literally selling food that actually makes you think). There’s no raw love, no cuddles, no hair in ponies, no dirty joggers and running tights, no big smiles (do they have teeth?), no itchy eyes, no belly laughs. They’re simply selling a dream, a dream of money, good looks and Hollywood tans. They look perfect. Perfectly boring? I think so.
Sure, all the numbers are fascinating but there’s no Kaboom, just Krap. And with that I’m releasing myself from this brief encounter inside the Kardashian Kone. And to the fans who remain loyal, Keep Kalm and Karry On. Enjoy the ride.
We raised the phenomenon on the Mamamia on Sky News show. Sam’s reaction is hilarious:
Alissa Warren began her career answering phones for Steve Price at 2UE in Sydney and then went on to report news. Two years later she moved to “A Current Affair” and was lucky enough to interview everyone from Elle Macpherson to Australia’s dodgiest termite inspector. Alissa’s currently on maternity leave from Nine’s Sydney newsroom. You can follow her on twitter here.
Here’s a bumper gallery of the Kardashians:

Where do you stand on the Kardashians? Do you get them? Do you watch them? Do you even understand them?

I think many families can easily make reality shows like the one they have. “Oh.. can you believe Kim wants to get a tattoo!”…”what if mum finds out?”.. “she’ll be upset, mum shouldn’t know?”.. “promise me you won’t tell Khloe” (I have made that up) lol.. it is entertaining but really, its based on normal things only at the high level of a celebrity, with expensive mansions, dinners, cars, etc. Other than that, there’s nothing special about them – as people. Kim Kardashian may be one of the most famous and now popular women in the world based on those stats – followers on twitter, fans, etc, but she certainly isn’t one of the most beautiful..
There are so many beautiful women in the world! – I don’t know, maybe its my “extreme” appreciation for beauty.. that I would be a hopeless critic.. but I strongly believe that level of attention could easily befall any one of many women I’ve seen on the street.. there’re no words in the dictionary to describe some of the eyes, smiles, etc;) I’ve seen.. and, in my inexperienced opinion, would rank heaps higher than Kim Kardashian if they had the same level of media attention. I call them undiscovered jewels

i love the show and i love the kardashians! i can’t explain why but i just do!
I love what happens and the reactions. The fact that they’re half scripted doesn’t bother me because most reality shows are pure reality anyway.

I have to admit I’m not a massive kardashians however they seem to be a very smart (businesswise) family which is something I admire! I do however struggle with this article’s author complaint about the lack of substance and their willingness to take money for shamess promotion (my words) however the author works for ACA! My goodness that show loves some shameless promotion, which pizza, supermarket, chees brand is the best? Don’t tellme those stories aren’t paid for. I’m sorry but working for ACA does very little for her credibility, the volume of stories that seem to be produced for hate just doesn’t sit well with me. At least the k’s aren’t negative!!!

I’m surprised that there are so many women on here saying how much they love the show because of the ‘realness’ ‘family closeness’ blah blah. Just like the Hills, this is a SCRIPTED reality show. Have none of you seen the producer leaks that have come out? How Khloe’s ‘touching’ request that Bruce walk her down the aisle on the eve of her wedding? All come up with by the producers.
Like the show if you want, but don’t get too defensive about it or its stars. Its a reality show for crying out loud. And if these are the kind of women you want your little girls to grow into, I despair. The girl parlayed herself into the limelight as a result of a sex tape.
loading...
Of course we can tell that the show is scripted. We are not idiots. This is reality TV, I get it.
The thing is, they ARENT actors, so they cant fake their relationships with each other and be convincing.
Like them or hate them, I think the point most people are making here is that this author obviously hasnt watched the show, which in my opinion is pretty shabby journalism.

Just cause they didn’t study at NIDA doesn’t mean they cant act or fake things…helps when you are bening asked to endorse every product under the sun as well…

Lots of references to Bruce Jenner’s Olympic gold medal, but no-one has so far further enlightened us – so, naturally I just had to Google – FYI he won the gold medal in the Decathlon in the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Because we clearly needed one more useless fact about this family…

“There’s no raw love, no cuddles, no hair in ponies, no dirty joggers and running tights, no big smiles (do they have teeth?), no itchy eyes, no belly laughs.”
….ummm, this is exactly what the show is about, that’s why it is such a fun show to watch. It’s not highbrow, but the fact that they are actually themselves, warts and all, is the show’s appeal.
This author has no idea, did she actually watch any of the show?
I never understood the phenomenon that is the Kardashians from reading tabloid magazines, I just couldn’t work out why they were famous, but I started watching it one weekend and I got totally hooked and now I get it.
They have used Kim’s 15 minutes of fame as Paris Hilton’s friend to take advantage of every business opportunity they can for the benefit of the whole family. I think they are pretty smart.
Give me the Kardashian sisters any day to Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears.

I’ve given this a lot of thought (hence the multiple posts) I think Kim and her family are the smartest women in the world!
To think it was only a few short years ago that Kim was walking alongside Paris on Bondi Beach….. Paris is HISTORY. Kim is one smart career woman. Do I think she married for money? Doubt it, I think they have enough.
loading...
Absolutely- amazing brand marketing!
Sure, she’s got a lot of money but I wouldn’t be surprised if she married for publicity!
loading...
Anyone who has watched Keeping Up with the Kardashians knows that Kim is an insane romantic. SHE was totally in love. You could see it in her face. Him on the other hand…
And yes, they are all immensely intelligent.
loading...
Ha, intensely intelligent. Not so sure of that. I too fell into the spell of watching their show but mostly because i couldn’t believe how vaccuous they are. I affectionately call it the trashy ho’ show. Reality meets careful directing and smart editing.
loading...
“Immensely intelligent.” The Kardashians. Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha,ha, ha, ha, ha,ha, ha, ha, ha,ha, ha, ha, ha,ha, ha, ha, ha,ha, ha, ha, ha,ha, ha, ha, ha,ha, ha, ha, ha. Thanks for that. Best laugh I’ve had in a long time.

Well Kris Humphries is now officially the new Kevin Federline.

Alissa – I’m SO glad to find someone who thinks the same as me!! I cannot for the life of me understand this ‘cult of celebrity’ that has grown up and now pervades every form of media. My husband just asked me who Kim Kardashian is and in all honesty, I couldn’t tell him one thing about her, except what I’ve seen in my FB feed – that she filed for divorce after 72 days. Like WHO CARES?? There’s so much else to be interested in that is worthwhile – celebrities are just people with too much exposure.
loading...
I didn’t understand or ‘get’ the Kardashians for years but then last year i was bored or something and had access to pay tv when a marathon was on and i just started watching and before I knew it I was hooked! It was a bit sad really, but a friend came to stay the weekend after) who coincidentally is a bit of an academic and she was pleasantly surprised and didn’t leave my house until late the next day because she had to keep watching!

I hate K names so its very difficult to kare about the Ks

We all have to make a living, and all sell our labour in some way. If there is a market that is willing to pay millions for a smile while a pittance for physical factory labour then the problem is with the system not the individual who is doing the best they can.
And I suspect that Alissa would have seen first-hand how the market has an overwhelmingly bigger thirst for the insubstantial, the superficial – ACA has demonstrated that it will peddle moral panic and xenophobia whenever it can.

So. Well. Put!
Yet thee on ACA not be the first to cast stones

I just don’t get it.

I can’t stand any reality tv. Would much rather be living my own reality than watching someone else live theirs on tv.

Don’t kare about the Kardashians.
This is a serious question/comment. As of late, every article seems to have been written by several people. There is the introduction stating that MM Managing Editor Lana has written something, followed by a sentence or two from Lana before the article as written by (insert name here) actually begins.
Is it possible to go directly to the story rather than introduce several people as contributers when their actual contribution is minute ?
Absolutely no offence to Lana, but her one or two sentences added nothing to the article especially as the kerfuffle is clearly indicated in what has been supplied word for word by News.com.
loading...
I agree. What’s up with the Managing Editor, Lana post anyway, its on all her posts now. Trying for status?
loading...
I asked all the MM team to mention their titles so people would know who they were.

The post credited to Anonymous was written by me. Hit that darn Save button without thinking……again ! Sorry.

I’m not a massive fan of their various TV shows but it is a perfect show for when your hungover or exhausted and just don’t want to think – I don’t mean that as an insult, I’ll happily admit its a guilty pleasure TV show.
People need to stop calling them stupid though (not just here, on other news sites too) I wish I was able to live and be paid to attend events with no overwhelming talent other than my ability to brand myself.
It wouldn’t shock me to find out that this was the plan all along but people need to remember that the show ISN’T reality…. people have pointed out they were fighting/unresolved issues on the show before the wedding etc- I’m sure that majority of it is scripted!
loading...
Look, I’ll preface this by saying-I’ve never watched a show, never been interested more than a brief read of a magazine article, or mamamia post. I didn’t read yesterday’s post, nor have I read the comments, so sorry if I’m repeating something.
Where does the line between life end and drama begin for these people, (inc The Hills etc). Where do you dra the line? Shouldn’t it be before (allegedly?) casting someone to marry. And actually going through with it? That’s real life.
How long do you have to go on, and how much money do you have to make before you say-Hang on, I’m going to keep my private life private now. I’m not going to be followed everywhere, I’m not going to have decisions made for me, I’m going to live my life for me.
loading...
Very poorly researched article.. Scripted or not – the show focusses on cuddles, belly laughs and pony tails. Sure, there’s also selfishness, vanity and pride- but hey, the show is entertaining!
Factoids for those who came to read this article hoping to learn more about this insanely rich family:
1. Kim’s father (deceased) defended OJ Simpson during his trial.
2. Kim’s father and mum (Kris) divorced and she remarried a few years before OJ’s trial. Kris was good friends with Nicole (who OJ was on trial for killing).
3. Kim’s step dad is Bruce Jenner. Olympic medallist from years back.
4. Bruce Jenner’s son, Brody (Kim’s step bro) is also a bit of a celebrity for being on “The Hills” and dating the likes of Lauen Conrad, Kristin Cavalleiri and currently Avril Lavigne.
5. Kim started her own little business ( with the help of late father) buying stuff and selling it for a profit on eBay. Business did well and she also styled celebrities.
6. Kim along with mother and sisters, started a clothing boutique called Dash, in Calabasas (sucesss here launched sister store in Miami) and further along the track they started designing clothes.
7. Kim did date Ray J- singer Brandy’s brother and they did make a sex tape which went viral and yes, he did pee on her in the tape.
8. Kim has now been married twice. Her first marriage was kept secret for a while from her family.
9. Kim and her family have a few reality tv shows.
10. Kim’s mother is her manager.
11. Kim now has her own perfume out.
These are just a few trivial things that spring to mind when I think of this family.
Sure, from watching the ‘drama’ unfold on the show, it definitely isn’t role model material, but hey, neither is Home and Away IMO!
I don’t really care if there are haters out there – there will always be fans and haters! Clearly the fans are winning cause these guys are raking it in.
To those who say the Kardashians are famous for ‘being famous’.. Well, yes.. but aren’t most people famous for ‘being famous’ in some way or another?? It doesn’t mean they’re less entitled to the fame!!
loading...
He peed on her?? Wow.
loading...
He did NOT pee on her in the tape!
loading...
Thanks Beka. I really had no idea where the K family came from. Your factoids put it into perspective as to their connections.
loading...
I love the show! Addicted to anything Kardashian! Although I would not buy any of their products or anything they endorse just because theyre linked with it..not that naive ! But yeah its fantasy and escapism and they have done very well for themselves. Sometimes the superficiality makes me a bit sick and I wouldn’t want to be part of that family, but they are very entertaining !
loading...
Agree wholeheartedly!
loading...
To be picky- in the gallery several pics are repeated. One or two do not have the correct identifiers.
“no big smiles (do they have teeth?)” – holy jesus look at that photo of 4 pouty unimpressed sourpusses that you used in the main of the article… OOOPS sorry big teethy grins from all 4 Kardashian women!
Love them.
If I had the ingenuity to make myself a global brand and bring in millions OMG I’d be doing it.
Yep I LOVE that we live in a society where relative unknowns can launch themselves and make careers. If they didn’t do anything all day but shop and sit around their mansions, we wouldn’t have 50 billion photo’s of them and 50 billion ads they’re in and 50 billion products associated with them.
Sex tape? Yes a sex tape- because no mamamia readers have ever had sex tapes themselves (refer to post a while back about sexting).. difference is, nobody wants to see your sex tape.
So I have no problem at all with my daughters looking up to these women.
Celebs have been selling off their weddings for ages- How many have million dollar deals for exclusive photo’s? Some canny companies realised Hmmn if we put our product into that wedding we get exposure, so they offer their items. Celebs win/companies win. Of course Kim could have said No to all the freebies- but why should she? Most are only outraged because the marriage didn’t last. In the other Kardashian post I listed a heap of celeb marriages that have not lasted the distance.
The companies are offering, why should they have to turn it down? The fact that I or someone else paid for my wedding doesn’t change my feelings regarding my marriage.
I don’t understand the hatred of them. Why on earths name care that much? If they’re on TV- switch channels. In a mag- flip the pages. On mamamia- don’t click the headline. So so easy to ignore them.
loading...
Well said! Best comment on this all day.
loading...
Ditto this.
loading...
Oh to have the $,time, incentive & helpers to look that polished every day!
love the show,love/hate what they represent but in the end my insecurities come out big time when I watch them (their perfect hair, skin, houses etc).
loading...
Agree! Would be lovely to look so beautiful ALL the time – but also exhausting and uncomfortable at times too I would assume. I think the Kardashian women represent the healthiest body image in a long, long time. All of them are curvy and beautiful. No pressure to be stick thin and I feel that makes them better role models to young girls than most celebs these days.
loading...
I have watched an episode here and there. They have always appeared very close and loving to me, vapid and shallow perhaps, but I wouldn’t describe them as being ‘perfect’ or not smiling..
You don’t earn that much money for this long without being smart and working hard, which these girls do.
As for respecting what they stand for, or them as role models.. not really. About as much as I respect shows like ACA for what they do.
loading...
Still don’t get it. Are they famous because of a sex tape?
loading...
And I believe the dad was OJ Simpson’s lawyer. Both classy and worthy reasons to be famous.
loading...
So let me get this straight. We in Sydney miss out on the Queen of England and the President of the Us, only to be stuck with some airhead from some silly “show” about their family. Hey I’ll be happy to take some of that $70million if someone wants to film my family.
loading...
Whilst I’m not a fan of this family at all, my attention was piqued when I learned that their step-father is Bruce Jenner. Back in the day, he was a very famous, greatly admired Olympic athlete, and oh so handsome! (I was about 12 at the height of his celebrity.)
The two episodes I’ve seen about his step-daughters showed him to be a long-suffering, hen-pecked father and husband. What a come down from his previous, well-earned fame.
loading...
“The two episodes I’ve seen about his step-daughters showed him to be a long-suffering, hen-pecked father and husband. What a come down from his previous, well-earned fame.” This. This I agree with oh, so much.
loading...
I am being picky!! Can we PLEASE find out the difference between “they are “(they’re) and “there”?
We are (we’re) and were!! Just saying! When someone posts how intelligent they are, and then writes “were (we are) all watching” . It ticks me off…

As a teacher I can’t begin to tell you how much this annoys me too!

Apparently Kim Kardashian was held up by Customs at Sydney Airport today…..they found a false bottom in her suitcase.
loading...
The headline says “The Kardashians explained. Kind of.” Umm, try “Not at all”. I’ve read this and am still not the wiser about why or how this family is famous.
loading...
Exactly! This article doesn’t shine any light for people not in the know as Alissa doesn’t know anything about the family, hasn’t watched the shows and hasn’t done any research. It’s just her somewhat uninformed opinion. Hardly a “Kardashian handbook” MamaMia!!
loading...
Bo, why don’t you explain it to us then, you seem to know all there is to know about this family. I don’t meant to be snarky, just curious. I thought the whole point of the article was that no one can explain why they’re famous because no one knows.
loading...
Plenty of people know why they’re famous, thats why I’m confused as to why Mamamia went with Alissa. As I said in my comment below, they are predominately famous because of their hit reality tv show which is watched by millions of people worldwide. In addition, they are an old hollywood family with lots of connections (their late father was OJ Simpson’s lawyer and their stepdad Bruce is an olympic gold medalist). Plus they own three boutique clothing stores and endorse many products.
I could have written a whole article on it in much more detail if given the chance. But my point is (and I say this as someone with a journalism degree) if you are employed to write an article as Alissa was for MamaMia then you RESEARCH it. Throughout uni I wrote articles on things I had no idea about – so I spent a lot of time exploring them and educating myself. My gripe with Alissa and this article is that it is lazy, poorly researched journalism.
loading...
I think the Kardashians must of woken up one day and saw Paris Hilton in every magazine famous for doing nothing and went “Fuck it, if Paris can be famous for doing nothing, the Osbornes can ride off the back of their father’s fame – and the rest of the family is famous for nothing – surely WE can do the same.”
Kudos to them for making something out of nothingness and vapidity, it must be hard to think of new plotlines when you do “fuck all” all day except hang out in your mansion and fight with your sisters over shoes and handbags all day.
But who are the real idiots in this vortex of bullshit?
We are.
Because we watch their show, buy their shitty clothing lines and perfumes, we think that by being a part of that image we are living the dream. We are imagining a different life that is so manufactured and unbelievable, we don’t know what is reality and what is scripted.
I am actually sickened by the whole wedding saga. To take marriage and the sacred nature of wedding cermonies and turn it into “entertainment” for millions of viewer.s Only to pull the pin on it 72 days later, is a punch to the stomach for anyone who views marriage as an important pact which must be honoured and held in esteem,.and sacred to those who take those vows
They just cheapened marriage and did it for the cold hard cash.
Lots of celebse get married and suddenly go and get divorced the next week, but they have not been paid millions of dollars to do it. And had the whole wedding paid for by sponsors for advertising,. AND televised it for all the world to see. It is the public way they have chosen to do it that makes it not just about them and I think what they have done is irresponsible and disgusting.
loading...
Kim did learn from Paris, they used to be good friends and Kim was her stylist for a while.
loading...
Happymum, can I give every word you’ve written the thumbs up, I couldn’t agree more.
loading...
I thought I got it, i was a fan, a bit of harmless drama of the inside of another’s families life BUT I was so wrong! Who’s dumber kris who married one of them or me for watching!!!!!
really they must be sitting around thinking of all theses things to do, like ‘oh my god Kim should like so get married, like yah that would make like so much money’ ‘yah, and the we can like sell hang bags and perfume…’
So this harmless show has turned ne against them, (am i still a fan of khloe and larmar?!) but with all that make up, perfection imagine, fake lives, fake careers, fake relationships – how did I think reality tv was reality! Silly me for watching and believing!
This wedding sham just pushed me over the egde, of course everyone in the family is going to ‘support’ her – there all in on it and to make more money!!!
loading...
There is no proof the wedding was a sham just a lot of haters jumping onto a nasty idea. Let’s face it Kris was a f%$#wit from the beginning and as for Kim it is extremely obvious if you watch the show she has massive insecurities and finds it very difficult to be alone. My money is on she thought she was in love because she wanted to be in love and the whole thing snowballed too fast for either of them and reality has sunk in now. Nobody knows the truth but them….. just saying!
loading...
Fair enough

Like people have admitted below, I like the Kardashians. I love their shows and find them really entertaining. AND I have a journalism/PR degree and a Law degree so I’m hardly a stupid bimbo – I watch ABC and documentaries too, but I love some light hearted entertainment sometimes too. Sue me!
They are famous because their shows are loved and watched by millions of people. I think they have a much more valid claim to fame than a lot of other celebs out there!
I find that people who bad mouth the Kardashians are usually people who haven’t seen the show. Like those people who always talk trash about America but haven’t even been there. Pathetic.
I don’t really understand why you got Alissa to write this? Its not particularly witty or entertaining and she doesn’t appear to know much about the family nor watched their shows ??
Comments like: “There’s no raw love, no cuddles, no hair in ponies, no dirty joggers and running tights, no big smiles (do they have teeth?), no belly laughs” are just wrong, wrong wrong. This is *exactly* what the show is about!! There is loads of “raw love”, “cuddles” and “belly laughs”!! Please Mamamia, next time run an article by someone who has actually done the research, not just regurgitating hearsay.
loading...
Exactly!
loading...
Agree 100 times over.
For someone who worked at ACA I think it’s a bit presumptuous to put the boot into the Kardashians.
And that paragraph near the end “There’s no raw love etc” shows that she’s never watched an episode in her life.
Seems that MamaMia prefers to put opinion first rather than any actual research or thought.
loading...
Ha! Yes ACA is hardly the bastion of high quality journalism!! I think its interesting that despite what some commentators have written below, so many smart, educated women love the entertainment provided by the Kardashians. I read enough dull, dry legislation at uni so sometimes I like to unwind with someone entertaining. Watching the Kardashians has *nothing* to do with intelligence.
loading...
You are spot on!! No belly laughs?? Clearly never seen the show!
Now that I have travelled extensively and met a lot of people from all walks of life I am really getting frustrated by the ‘tall poppy’ syndrome in Australia. Such a lot of haters on people who are successfuly with no real basis in their argument.
loading...
You say that you’re “too Kool for Kardash”, yet you’ve just written an article on them – a misinformed one at that. You’ve clearly not researched the show well enough because their show is all about raw love, cuddles etc. In fact – that’s why they are so successful, it is raw emotion that you watch.
If you don’t watch it that’s fine – but don’t write an article about them in a condescending and disapproving manner like you’re so much better than anyone who does “Kare for Kardash”.
loading...
ACA never researches anything well either, force of habit perhaps?
loading...
BAM!!
loading...
no matter what the hell anyone thinks of them…they are some smart little fuckers! Who knows how anyone gets famous for being famous….all i know is they have now turned it into a business that is predicted to be a Billion dollar empire in the next few years and good on them….they worked out a way to make money and all of us here typing on MM about them is only fueling their not so metaphorical jet.
ps
i watched a few episodes before the wedding and that Kris dude is a big dickwad…they got divorced cos he is a prick….just saying!
loading...
I am not into them at all. I hate reality TV and think this whole sham marriage thing is a total disgrace. But I do like some of their handbags!! So I am torn, Natalie Imbruglia style…….
loading...
The Kardashian’s are revolting opportunists. Why are respected journalists so fascinated by them? Surely they really only appeal to 12 year olds and 16 year old boys?
loading...
What a waste of space. If you have the business smarts or whatever to have that much money, freaking do something worthwhile with it.
And all of you buying into this crap – don’t you have better things to do?
(And before I get a smartarse comment about how I’m commenting on this article, I thought I may get some insight onto whether these people WERE anything more than a waste of space, but apparently not.)
loading...
I find your comment to be unnecessarily nasty Tallulah… You don’t have any guilty pleasures or enjoy anything frivolous and fun? We don’t all have to like the same things, but we should all agree to not judge someone else on what they enjoy.
loading...
Unless you’re a millionaire, pretty sure they’re using the space they take up more lucratively than you are.
loading...
If it wasn’t for their mum I don’t think they would be so famous and rich! It seems like she’s the one always pushing them to do start new projects. I remember in one episode where she was having incontinence problems and in the end had signed herself up to become the spokesperson of a company that sells panty liners for such problems! My point is she’s always looking for ways to make money. Plus she gets 10% of whatever her kids make so…
I read today that her memoir is out – interesting timing huh!

I also have to out myself as a Kardashian fan. I actually love their show – switch the brain off and laugh at the craziness that is their blended family. I don’t read the gossip mags, but if you actually watch them on the show I don’t think they’re as bad as they seem. I mean, they all have strong personalities, they fight, they have the normal family ups and downs that we all go through, but they always stick together and look out for each other. And I have to say Bruce Jenner is a legend.
The girls ran their own boutique before fame hit, so they must have some level of business acumen. I think Kim’s sex tape really brought her infamy though, and somehow that was leveraged into a reality TV show of the whole family?
I think Kim is a sweet but naive girl who has brought this latest saga on herself. She and Kris Humphries clearly rushed in too fast and you can see that she has become obsessed with a fairy tale wedding and babies, rather than the reality of a meaningful relationship. And her values have become really warped in the crazy Hollywood reality TV world she’s caught up in (did anyone see her flip out when she lost a $70,000 diamond earring on holidays in Bora Bora?!?!). She needs to take time out and take stock I think.
Anyway, clearly I know way too much about them!! Back to folding the washing and kid-wrangling…

They were beautiful, had a small claim to fame, and some money. They took that money and exploited themselves to make more money.
The end.

*raises glass*

Which you of course would NEVER do, given the opportunity.

If it didn’t work, they wouldn’t do it.
I don’t really follow them but I have to admire them for getting set up financially in whatever way works for them.
I wish I could find a way to not pay for my wedding!

It’s actually really important to think about the kind of damaging influence these kind of people have on others. Young women look up to them (for what I don’t know, maybe being popular?) and think that they to can make that much money and be that popular with just a little exposure. No wonder young people put everything on twitter and myspace and youtube! They see that exploiting yourself and your family and friends for money is ok because it makes you popular and rich, and if you’re popular and rich everyone loves you and you’ll be happy, right? It started with people like Paris Hilton and has exploded with these leeches. The media really needs to stop supporting this kind of thing because it is turning our little girls into mini Kardashian wannabes who have nothing more in their lives than shopping.

I have to admit I’ve only caught glimpses of them on tv but reading the other comments on here, I think if people take something positive from their show, then that’s a good thing (even if I personally don’t get anything from them).
I don’t think the K’s are to blame for what you’re talking about., I think they’re just tapping into it.
I see it as the media giving the public what they want to see. If the media supported the K’s and no one bought the magazines or their products, or watched their shows, then I really don’t think the media would continue to follow them around.
Thanks for your comment, made me think about it.

I’m a huge fan of the Kardashians. I just adore them. There a lot better than some of the so called ‘celebrities’ out there.
Who cares how they became famous. Whats important to me is that they make me laugh, make me want to crash tackle my sister with hugs and kisses, and make me proud to not be a tiny size zero and embrace my booty.
If Khloe swears a little too much, Kim falls in love too often and they all wear a little too much makeup then thats okay. Because the positive things that they bring to many young girls is contagious.
There not famous for nothing – there famous for making people laugh and making young women feel good about themselves and their bodies.
And if you think their teaching young women that you can become famous for absolutely nothing then thats just a load of bollocks. Were not stupid – we know were not going to become famous, nor do we necessarily want to be.
Im just saying, your daughters could look up to much worse role models. I find the people who condemn the Kardashians are the ones who have never actually watched any of their shows.
If I had never watched Keeping Up With the Kardashians and had only seen what the media feeds us through gossip magazines, short interviews and meticulously placed quotes I would probably think the same thing.

I know I want my daughter to look up to someone who gets famous off a sex tape..such a good influence

I didnt actually know that Kim had made a sex tape until a couple of episodes in. In fact I always forget thats why there famous. It only ever gets brought up by haters because its an easy dig.
Whenever I defend the Kardashians people assume Im some bimbo without a life. But I just get angry because there actually smart, caring, loving sisters who make a lot of girls feel good about themselves.
Just sayin.

Dear God, how can Kim K make you feel good about yourself, I don’t mean to be argumentative but my mind boggles. This is a woman who is so vain it hurts and who, by the age of 30, has had more surgeries/facial alterations than I can count. I watched an episode from 2009 the other day and it’s amazing how much her face has changed in just the last two years, don’t get me started on what she looked like 10 years ago.
And watching this makes you feel good about yourself?? But then again I guess you probably believe she has never had any plastic surgery and is a natural beauty because she said so in her show.

I took from Georgia’s comment that it was their interactions as a family (which, if you have ever seen their show, you will know that while they are disfunctional, they have great relationships and a great bond and are actually pretty good business women, not their looks that make her feel good.

Actually the Kardashians became famous back when their (now deceased) father was the lawyer for OJ Simpson, then Kim was friends with Paris Hilton, THEN she ran her own business with her sisters when the tape got released.
People make mistakes like that sheesh! At the end of the day, they all have more business accumen than most people, so lighten up

I am pretty sure that the show was before the sex tape.. about halfway through season 1 the sex tape sage begins.
loading...
Wrong, sex tape happened before…that’s why Ryan Seacrest and E got in board.
loading...
No, you’re wrong. The had begun production and E nearly cancelled the show when they found out about the tape, because they wanted a “family friendly” vibe. E have publicly admitted this.

Alissa, you put it brilliantly “I feel about as much warmth for this family as I do for a bag of onions”. Each to their own but I will never ever understand their popularity.

Yep, yep, yep.

I am a Kardashian addict. I can’t help but find them fascinating. They have made millions in selling themselves but that is because people buy into it. They appear a little lifeless and boring in magazines but watch the show and the way they laugh and fight and cry with each other, they seem like just a normal family.
The Khloe and Lamar spin off show is great. They are so cute and Khloe is hilarious!

I love Keeping Up With The Kardashian’s, it’s my ultimate guilty pleasure. But I’m not a fan of Kim, just haven’t warmed to her.
I love the show for Khloe and Kourtney. They just come across as genuine whereas Kim seems so perfect and manufactured all the time. Watching Khloe transform from the younger sister who has always felt insecure about her looks, being so different from her petite sisters, and feeling like the odd one out in her family, has become such a strong, funny and grounded woman. She seems to see beyond the fame. And Kourtney’s transformation from single girl to mother has been a joy to watch.
I don’t watch KUWTK to learn something, I watch it for entertainment. They are such a close knit family with the ups and downs that inevitably happen. They’re hilarious (at least I think so!) and I can identify somewhat with them. Love them or hate them, they’re savvy business women who have turned themselves into a major brand.

I love them too Emma! Khloe and Bruce are my favourites. Not a fan of Kim or the younger sisters – think the younger sisters are awful teenagers and very bratty.
I was rewatching Khloe’s wedding the other week I was abit taken back at how awful she was to Bruce before her wedding though! Poor Bruce!
I was talking about it at our Melbourne Cup lunch at work yesterday and one of the senior lawyers looked at me in front of everyone and said “You don’t seriously like that show do you?”.
I was so embarrassed I just said “Yeah I love it, such good trash TV”.
I should have turned around and said “What, do you think I sit at home watching ABC and reading the financial review, sorry I don’t fit that stereotype!”.
loading...
I know right! I just finished my journalism degree but the amount of times I’d own up to liking them, when for whatever reason they were being trashed in a discussion, people would look at me like “aren’t you smarter than that?” It’s called ENTERTAINMENT people!
Khloe was a bit disrespectful to Bruce but it all turned out in the end…but how much more sincere and loving was her wedding to Lamar when you compare it to Kim’s fiasco? She had the right idea.

I also own a copy of kardashian konfidential – haha oh the shame if my colleagues saw that on my shelf!

I flicked through the book but didnt commit, I cop enough shit for owning all the DVDs lol

Haha I got the book because it was about $16 on book depository, and tell myself I can buy the DVDs once the series ends and have a box set, but I don’t think it will EVER end so I’m thinking about starting to buy now! Haha

I actually really like the Kardashians.

Just wondering if you lifted this article from The Daily Telegraph? I thought it sounded familiar, and I had read something very similar to it on news.com.au earlier today. Except they have credited the story to Nathan Klein, Holly Byrnes and Joel Christie of The Telegraph

The story was written for us by Alissa before Kim arrived. We excerpted the news at the start today as a hook for the piece (before the quoted text, it says news.com reports).
